Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking an experienced Industrial Hygienist to join the Knolls Safety and Health team!



The Safety and Health (S&H) organization manages a comprehensive industrial hygiene program designed to reduce the risk of work-related disease or illness. The Industrial Hygienist performs baseline and periodic surveys of work areas and operations to evaluate potential worker health risk and documents exposure assessments for chemical, physical, and biological agents and ergonomic stressors using recognized exposure assessment methodologies.In addition, all Safety and Health personnel perform independent overviews and assessments of Laboratory work to ensure that operations are conducted safely, efficiently and in compliance with applicable requirements (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, and ANSI standards).



Functions of this position include, but are not limited to:




  • Collaborate with engineering and production organizations and provide subject matter expertise to determine hazard controls
  • Conduct inspections of site facilities and provide oversight of laboratory operations, preventative and corrective maintenance tasks, building construction, renovation, and demolition
  • Measure, audit, and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard controls and hazard control programs to ensure compliance with safety standards and requirements
  • Identify and develop process improvements to ensure safe and efficient site operations, and involve personnel at all levels in developing the safety culture

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience; or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; or Currently an Principal Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.
Preferred Skills

  • Master's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health, or similar field of study
  • Currently qualified as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or eligible to sit for the examination within 1 year of start date.
  • Experience with the selection and use of industrial hygiene monitoring equipment as well as interpretation of monitoring results
  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulatory requirements in 29 CFR 1910 and/or 29 CFR 1926 (OSHA)
  • Fundamental understanding of national safety consensus standards (e.g., ANSI, NFPA)
  • Experience interacting with a diverse workforce including engineers, skilled tradespersons, scientists, and technicians
  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills

Pay Range
$105,200.00 - $164,400.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
