Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a System Programmer/Administrator III (High Performance and Research Computing) for the Office of Information Technology. Reporting to the IT Manager of the Platform Research Systems group within Enterprise Infrastructure and Service Delivery, the System Programmer/Administrator III is responsible for the engineering, administration, and lifecycle management of Linux-based research computing platforms supporting high-performance clusters and related services.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Hardens and secures systems.
  • Performs monitoring, patching, and upgrades.
  • Ensures stability, performance, and high availability of core services (compute, scheduler, storage, networking, and software stacks/modules).
  • Develops automation for repeatable operations.
  • Troubleshoots complex incidents.
  • Supports environments across University data centers and select edge locations, working closely with peer platform teams to deliver resilient, scalable services.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline and five years of relevant experience in Linux system administration, systems programming, or research computing or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise in the administration of complex technical environments, including Linux-based HPC systems, cluster job schedulers, parallel storage, and high-speed interconnects.
  • Experience in at least two of the following areas: HPC system administration, working with researchers in an academic environment, knowledge of software used in research, general IP networking, familiarity with scripting or programming languages, configuration management tools, or cybersecurity.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve complex technical problems and maintain secure, reliable systems.
  • Experience with the installation and support of scientific software and languages, including Python, R, Julia, and Fortran, as well as research applications such as SAS, MATLAB, Stata, SPSS, and supporting tools such as Jupyter, Git, Conda, and RStudio.
  • Knowledge of containers and virtual machines to support research workflows.
  • Strong understanding of systems security practices, network and storage fundamentals, and workflow/policy considerations in production computing environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms and to work collaboratively in support of research computing initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a technical or science discipline.
  • Experience in cybersecurity, network administration, numerical computing, IT planning, programming, databases, and configuration management tools.
  • Prior experience in higher education or academic research computing environments.
