Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Supervises the daily activities of workers responsible for calibrating, testing and repairing radiation instrumentation.
  • Reviews database calibration due reports to identify equipment calibration each week (e.g., M&TE tracking, routine re-calibrations of in-service equipment).
  • Manages source accountability of instrumentation sources.
  • Performs annual re-certification measurements of gamma calibrators.
  • Serves as a point of contact for instrumentation support requests.
  • Sets daily work priorities and assignments for instrumentation technicians and performs periodic management field observations (MFOs).
  • Communicates daily safety, quality and procedural issues with the work team.
  • Ensures adherence to company policies, guidelines and safety/operations procedures.
  • Works with Instrumentation Manager to address performance issues formally and makes disciplinary action recommendations when warranted.
  • Serves as primary customer contact for commercial instrumentation business (e.g., order placement/fulfillment assistance, technical consultation, resolving customer disputes).
  • Coordinates with instrumentation vendors/manufacturers concerning purchasing, repair and modifications of radiation protection instruments.
  • Performs new instrument evaluations, instrument upgrades, procedure development and preparation of technical documents related to instrumentation calibration and/or operation.
  • Conducts user training of new instruments for radiation safety and instrumentation group staffs.
  • Completes annual performance reviews with all members of their team and drafts performance evaluations for review and approval by Instrumentation Manager.
  • Reports instrumentation work status and issues to Instrumentation Manager.
  • Performs routine work assignments as an Instrumentation Technician when required including trouble-shooting, repair, and calibration of alpha, beta, gamma monitoring instruments, contamination monitors, air sampling equipment, and radioactivity counters.
  • Performs backup duties of I&C Leader (when required) for instrumentation group.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Strong judgment/decision making skills

  • Ability to interpret electronic drawings/schematics and troubleshoot radiation instruments
  • Strong attention to detail including use of precise calibration and test procedures
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Soldering and component level repair skills
  • Basic proficiency using Microsoft Office products

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Ability to use hands and feet to accomplish tasks as assigned
  • Ability to perform highly repetitive motions with fingers, hands, wrists, and shoulders
  • Ability to effectively communicate; speaking, reading, understanding, writing and hearing clear English; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
  • Basic math, and computer skills
  • Ability to perceive depth and adjust focus; basic hand/eye coordination
  • Ability to see close and distance, basic colors/shades, and peripheral vision




Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements
Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Associates degree or higher in related field preferred

Certifications

  • None required

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years instrumentation experience
  • Minimum of 1 year previous leadership experience

Preferred Experience

  • Previous leadership experience supervising technical staff
