Job Summary

The collection assistant will join the Botany department, supporting the collections manager and being trained primarily on collection management. The Botany department has an active digitization program, with over 60% of its 1.4 million specimens imaged and databased, and a vibrant and growing volunteer cohort contributing to this effort. Therefore, the primary duties for this collections assistant will be general herbarium tasks, including specimen preparation, digitization, specimen filing, and supervision of volunteers. The department will encourage this collections assistant to participate in public outreach opportunities at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.

Essential Functions



  • Handling delicate and irreplaceable botanical specimens.
  • Imaging specimens using departmental equipment.
  • Specimen label transcription and georeferencing in departmental databases.
  • Filing of specimens back into the herbarium.
  • Supervising and working with volunteers of all ages and undergraduate student co-ops/federal work study.


Required Qualifications



  • Minimum of a HS Diploma or GED.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a undergrad or graduate program studying botanical sciences, actively engaged in botanical research, or pursuing training in collections-based skills.

Additional Information
This is a Part-Time Per-Diem position classified as Non-Exempt. The offered pay is based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
