Engineering Manager - Vehicle Emissions Testing Laboratory
The Company Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. ("HATCI") is the North American headquarter of Hyundai Motor Company's R&D, serving the North American market needs of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands. HATCI's activities include product planning, design, quality, testing/evaluation, new technology development and innovation for vehicle systems. In addition to the Michigan HQ, HATCI also operates engineering test & development facilities and proving ground in California.
Our Team Vehicle Emissions Lab is one of the Engineering Groups in the Electrified Propulsion System Test (ePST) Department at HATCI. VEL focuses on testing for emissions compliance, development and benchmarking.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
The Position Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Vehicle Emissions Laboratory (VEL) at our Superior Township, MI facility. This individual will oversee a team of engineers and technicians responsible for vehicle emissions testing, including both internal combustion engines (ICE) and electrified vehicles (xEV), ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and supporting internal development efforts.
The Engineering Manager will manage testing programs for emissions certification, fleet validation, and competitive benchmarking. This role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams including calibration, certification, manufacturing, and global partners to achieve program and corporate objectives.
HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT
Core Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day operations of the Vehicle Emissions Laboratory, ensuring efficient and compliant testing processes.
- Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians.
- Oversee emissions testing for ICE and xEV vehicles in accordance with federal and state regulations.
- Coordinate benchmarking and fleet testing programs to support product development.
- Collaborate with other teams (calibration, certification, manufacturing) to meet project milestones and performance targets.
- Support strategic initiatives defined by Hyundai global and regional leadership.
- Ensure adherence to safety, quality, and environmental standards.
- Interface with regulatory agencies and internal quality teams to maintain compliance and operational excellence.
- In-depth understanding of ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and EV/HEV (Electric & Hybrid Electric Vehicle) systems from system-level to individual component-level applications.
- Conduct competitive assessments and benchmarking of emerging vehicle propulsion technologies to analyze design, functionality, and application opportunities.
- Responsible for the operation and maintenance of major lab systems including:
- Dynamometer systems
- Thermal management chambers/systems
- Data acquisition and control systems (e.g., Horiba STARS)
- Manage day-to-day operations including team leadership, training, evaluation, and performance management (hiring, promotions, discipline).
- Handle administrative responsibilities such as purchase requests, timecard approvals, vacation scheduling, and travel planning.
- Plan and monitor budgets and capital expenditures, forecasting future resource needs.
- Prepare bi-weekly status reports for mid-management and executive-level project summaries.
- Track project timing and deliverables, ensuring on-time execution and alignment with strategic goals.
- Participate in meetings and technical reviews with test system component suppliers.
- Ensure supplier solutions align with system/component functional requirements.
- Willingness to travel up to 15%, both domestically and internationally, to support testing, collaboration, or supplier reviews.
Core Capabilities
- History of strong project leadership and a proven track record for timely project delivery and project management
- Experience and understanding of vehicle propulsion systems, propulsion system operation (ICE, e-Motor, e-Powertrain, and hybrid powertrain) interactions and performance under various driving conditions, and calibration/control of propulsion systems on dyno relating to real world conditions.
- Effective communication and people skills to develop/keep good relationship with tech experts from HQ R&D Center and counterpart teams.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field (Master's preferred).
- 8+ years of relevant experience in vehicle emissions testing or powertrain development.
- 3+ years in a leadership or management role.
- Strong knowledge of emissions regulations and testing protocols (EPA, CARB, etc.).
- Experience with both ICE and electrified vehicle testing is highly desirable.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, cross-functional environment with internal and external stakeholders.
- Valid Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of people management experience (as an engineering supervisor or a manager).
- 2+ years of experience managing a test lab.
