Position Summary
The transplant organ recovery coordinator is accountable for coordinating the transplant organ recovery process. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self, and colleagues, the transplant organ recovery coordinator participates in monitoring, developing, and evaluating clinical practice while fulfilling department and organizational goals.

In conjunction with the transplant surgeon and the transplant physician, the Organ Recovery Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of evaluating organ offers, coordinating all necessary activities related to recovering the accepted organs, and transplanting the organs to the intended recipients. This allows for the assessment, evaluation, admission, management, disposition, and discharge of the donated organs within established protocols.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Acts as a liaison between the Transplant program staff, the transplant surgeon, the transplant medical team, the donor's hospital, the OPO and the intended recipient for the purpose of evaluating the organ offered for transplant.
  • Evaluates and reviews all organs offered by an Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) within the required timeframe. Communicates all pertinent donor and recipient information with the OPO and the transplant surgeon.
  • Communicates medical and psychosocial information on all potential transplant recipients to the parties for the purposes of matching and allocating the organ.
  • Follows appropriate documentation requirements and clinical protocols to ensure compliance with OPTN and CMS policies/procedures.
  • Calls patient and informs him/her of the organ offer and educates patients on the next steps.
  • Provides accurate and timely acceptance or refusal information to all required parties per OPO protocol. Once the organ is accepted, coordinates all the activities necessary for the procurement of the organ: transportation, locates and notifies the recipient, performs last minute conformation of information with the recipient.
  • Coordinates the intended recipient's admission to the hospital and the operating room.
  • Performs vital data verification with the OPO and transplant surgeon.
  • Completes all pre, peri and post transplantation documentation in EHR and UNOS as required by all regulatory requirements.
  • Removes the patient from the UNOS transplant WAIT list within 24 hours as required per protocol.
  • Maintains knowledge and skills through participation in continuing education activities.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or other healthcare related or other biological sciences area of study required.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to collect medical information, interpret, evaluate and present data.
  • Must be able to act independently, identify and discuss clinical issues.
  • Participate in on-site clinical meetings, events and training sessions.
  • Must be self-directed and demonstrate the ability to navigate through electronic systems and knowledge of Microsoft applications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous transplant or organ specific experience preferred.
  • Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator Certification preferred (must obtain within 2 years of employment).
