Responsibilities

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108 bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment for psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18yrs. Newport News has an on-site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming. Newport News, VA is a beautiful seaside city, rich in maritime history and conveniently located to DC and other major North Eastern cities.

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the delivery of inpatient, continuing care and family services. This includes providing clinical support to other staff members, conducting interventions, conducting psychosocial assessments, developing the resident's treatment plan, conducting group, individual and family therapy.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Completes the initial Psychosocial Assessment on the patient, and collaborates with the treatment team, family and patient on the development of the master treatment plan.
  • Transfers the problems identified in the assessments of the Master Problem List, and prioritizes the problems for treatment.
  • Clinician refers and triages patients to other placements as appropriate.
  • Uses effective interpersonal skills when dealing with patients, family members, and co-workers.
  • Monitors adherence to the program schedule and assists the multidisciplinary team in coordinating the resident's care.
  • Communicates with unit staff regarding resident's progress.
  • Assists with mentoring and orienting new therapists to the unit.
  • Provides admissions personnel with ongoing admissions and discharge information.
  • Attends and assists in treatment team meetings and clinical staffing meetings.
  • Utilizes effective oral and written communication.
  • Utilizes appropriate channels of communication.
  • Completes all reports and assessments as needed for both admissions and discharge.
  • Responsible for scheduling aftercare appointments specific to the patient's identified needs.
  • Develops forms and systems that are conducive to accuracy and superior service.
  • Models Service Excellence standards in accordance with department's annual Service Excellence goals.
  • Coordinates with the treatment team in planning of admissions process
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
  • Ability to perform work in an organized manner with focus on complete information and time related deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and at times work independently.
  • Ability to work under high levels of stress.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in the principles, procedures and best practices related to this position.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with all employee levels and customers.
  • Serves as a resident advocate with courts, schools, and family, etc.
  • Conducts group therapy sessions as assigned. Ensures that group therapy progress notes are completed on time per the policy.

  • Willing to work weekends as determined by schedule set by supervisor.

Qualifications

Position Qualifications:

Requires a Master's Degree in Human Services field. Prefer Two (2) year of experience working with adolescents in a psychiatric or acute facility. Situational evaluation and crisis intervention experience preferred.
