Department Information

Within this setting, the Department of World Languages and Cultures is committed to helping students become global citizens prepared with the linguistic and cultural proficiency necessary to be successful in an interconnected world. Rooted in the belief that language is the key to fostering cross-cultural understanding and facilitating international collaboration, the Department offers comprehensive degrees and creates opportunities for students to immerse themselves beyond the classroom in language clubs, community engagement, and study abroad programs. At the undergraduate level, students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in World Languages and Cultures with concentrations in Arabic Studies, Chinese Studies, French Studies, German Studies, Japanese Studies, Spanish Studies, and Spanish for the Professions as well as Minors in the same languages, Latin American Studies, and Comparative Literature. These programs encourage students to explore the richness of humankind through language acquisition and cultural immersion. At the graduate level, the Department offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Spanish and a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Spanish Education degrees that provide advanced training for those looking to deepen their language and cultural studies expertise or enter a career in language education. The individual hired in this position is expected to contribute to the Department's goals and mission of continued excellence and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service, and outreach. The new hire will advance the Department's direction of integrating cultural, historical, and literary studies with contemporary global issues, preparing students for careers in education, translation, international relations, and graduate study. This position reinforces the Department's commitment to student success by maintaining robust course offerings in high-demand areas, thus supporting timely degree completion.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of World Languages and Cultures, the Assistant Professor of Spanish position requires teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in both face-to-face and online formats. Courses to be taught may include those for the B.A. World Languages and Cultures, Spanish Studies and Spanish for the Professions Concentrations, M.A. and M.A.T. Spanish programs as well as for the Spanish and Latin American Studies Minors. The Assistant Professor will engage in productive scholarship in the discipline and provide service at the departmental, college, university, and professional levels. The position is a 10-month, tenure-track appointment and is housed on the University's Statesboro campus.



Required Qualifications
  • Earned doctoral degree in Spanish with expertise in Latin American Literature and Culture, or a closely related field, by August 1, 2026, with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Spanish.
  • Credentials and willingness to teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Willingness to teach in-person, hybrid, and online courses.
  • Ability and willingness to teach Spanish courses related to the professions.
  • Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
  • Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with teaching courses in translation, interpreting, and/or Spanish for health professions, business, etc.
  • Experience with identifying, placing, and supervising students in internships.
  • Experience with community outreach.
  • Experience with AI-assisted language learning.
  • Experience with ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
  • ACTFL-defined Superior-level speaking proficiency.


Proposed Salary

Commensurate with experience.
This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
