Your Role on the Team

Position Summary:

Reports to the Practice Manager, the HTLIII Supervisor is a working supervisor and COA/COT within the clinic. Shares day-to-day supervisory responsibilities with the Practice Manger, interviews, orients and trains new technical staff. Directs workflow, coaches and disciplines technical staff, defines performance expectations, assures excellent customer service, ensures staff competency, maintains accurate records, provides for effective communication and encourages ongoing employee development. Handles issues as regards to customer service, service to practitioners, problem solving, registration issues and patient financial services. Demonstrates the highest degree of proficiency in use of all equipment and performance of technical ophthalmic procedures. Performs preliminary examinations, including recording patient history, testing visual acuity, iIntra-ocular pressure, neutralizing current lenses with the lensometer, automated and simple manifest refractions, and screening color tests. Performs special tests based on physicians' orders including keratometer readings, visual fields, GDX, topography, and axial length measurements. Triages patient and pharmacy telephone calls and prescription refills, intervening with physicians as appropriate. In conjunction with the Manager, coordinates front and back office operations and scheduling to maximize patient and office flow and assists in assessing training needs of staff. Works independently within the parameters of COT certification.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required Qualifications:

  • Understanding of medical terminology, infectious control techniques and age related acuity levels
  • Understanding of JCAHO requirements
  • Previous experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
  • Must have two years experience in ambulatory ophthalmology setting
  • Must be competent in collecting and interpreting data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice of infection control techniques
  • Current COA/COT credentials
  • Current BLS certification
  • Critical thinking skills to problem solve and communicate with physicians on clinical issues
  • Able to perform all tests and patient work ups in order for MDs or Orthoptist to diagnose patient problem
  • Able to evaluate and document the patient/family response to care
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and work well in a constantly changing environment
  • Ability to guide and/or instruct other ophthalmic personnel in procedures and use of equipment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous supervisory experience in ophthalmology outpatient setting
  • Previous management experience in a health care setting
