Job Description Summary: |
The GW Office of Undergraduate Admissions seeks Outside Application Readers (ORs) to review First Year applications for the 2025-2026 cycle. Each OR will read, evaluate, and summarize applications in an assigned caseload and make preliminary admissions recommendations to the Admissions Committee.
ORs are required to attend virtual paid training sessions in October 2025 (exact dates
TBD). Additional virtual training may be conducted, as needed, beyond the initial training session. After initial training, ORs will have flexibility to read applications on their own weekly schedule, as long as weekly reading goals are reached. ORs will be instructed in GW application evaluation protocols and be expected to thoughtfully apply them to each assigned file. This includes a careful and holistic evaluation of academic records, letters of recommendation, student-written essays, extra-curricular commitments and achievements, and standardized test scores, if submitted.
The period of service for the OR is October 2025 (including training) through no later than the end of February 2026. Exact hours per week will vary between non-peak and peak review period. ORs hired for this role are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week with the flexibility to work up to a maximum of 40 hours per week during the peak application review period of January - February. This is an hourly-paid position based on level of experience as an application reviewer for GW and there are no benefits.
The OR position requires close cooperation with the Undergraduate Admissions Office staff to assist in the review process of application for admission. Though the OR will work remotely, they will be expected to maintain weekly communication with the OR supervisor and/or the professional staff member to whom they have been assigned in an evaluation team. Methods of communication may include, email, phone/text, Google chat, and/or other communication application platforms.
Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to this position. |

Preferred Qualifications: |
- Previous experience in selective college admissions, experience with SLATE and/or knowledge of GW is highly preferred.
- This position requires strong time management and organizational skills; strong critical thinking skills; independent initiative; and the ability to keep files (and the information they contain) confidential.
- Proficiency with computers, experience working remotely, data entry, and word processing is highly preferred.
- Candidates with strong verbal and written English language communication skills is highly preferred.

Application review is conducted online remotely and the OR should have High Speed internet and access to Zoom meetings. Each OR will be provided a GW issued personal computer and it must be returned once the reading cycle terminates at the end of February 2026. Instructions for returning equipment will be provided.
Given the sensitive nature of the admissions selection process, and to avoid any potential conflicts of interest, we will not consider candidates who have close relations with a high school junior or senior applying to college (whether to GW or elsewhere); currently work for a school or program that enrolls high school students; or currently work in the fields of college admissions or school/college counseling including independent college counseling. ORs cannot be currently employed in an exempt-classified, position at GW. Candidates who are currently employed elsewhere in a full-time position are eligible to apply but are strongly encouraged to consider the job expectations and demands of peak reading periods, which will often be 20+ hours per week. Successful completion of a Background Screening will be required as a condition of hire. |
