Job Summary

Florida International University (FIU) Libraries Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Center is looking for a skilled individual with experience in GIS software such as ESRI's ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS online, QGIS, etc. The GIS Center's mission is to support FIU's research enterprise and teaching mission by providing GIS-related services to the university community.

This includes engagement in various research projects across several disciplines, maintaining a robust GIS infrastructure including a computing environment, software and data licenses, etc. The center operates two cutting-edge teaching laboratories, state-of-the-art computing environment and also engages in original research within the geographical information and computing/data sciences.

The GIS Lab assistant will support this mission through primarily the following tasks:

  • Provide geo-data analysis and preparation for grant funded activities.
  • Provide support in mapping, GIS data management and analysis.
  • Assist public services for students and faculty who are in need of GIS Center's resources.
  • Help and guide students to FIU GIS Center's learning guides, tours, datasets and other resources.
  • Refer more advanced technical questions from the public to GIS Center faculty and staff.
  • Other duties assigned by direct supervisor.

Desired Qualifications

  • A High School degree and currently enrolled in a 4-year bachelors' degree in STEM or GIS-related field.
  • Course work in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geo-data management, with a B and above grade.
  • Demonstrated working experience with ArcGIS environment, including geodatabase design and management, ArcGIS Pro and its extensions; ArcGIS Online including StoryMaps and Apps, or other related programs and components.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Completed undergraduate degree in a GIS-related discipline.
  • Experience with other GIS software (ENVI, ERDAS, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of GIS-related infrastructure including computing, networking and hardware.
  • Desire to continuously learn and improve.

High school diploma or GED.
