Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Medical Services Assistant for the Medicine Department within New Jersey Medical School.
The Medical Services Assistant (
MSA) is to provide medical assistance to nurses and physicians in the overall care of patients, including technical procedures such as phlebotomy and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. The
MSA functions under the direct supervision and authority of the physician when performing clinical tasks during patient care.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Participates in the care of the patient, under the direct supervision of the Physician and in collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Performs related and delegated tasks, which includes requests for prescription refills, taking and relaying messages, directing patient flow, and running errands.
- Identifies self-learning needs related to job description and seeks out appropriate resources to meet learning needs.
- Schedules patient appointments including outside physicians and hospital/ancillary services.
- Manages difficult or emotional customer situations; responds promptly to customer needs; solicits customer feedback to improve service; responds to requests for service and assistance; meets commitments.
- Maintains a high level of professional responsibility and performance.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Graduation of a post-secondary medical assisting education program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Certifications/Licenses |
- Current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT), or any recognized certifying body approved by the Board.
- Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Must have attained a satisfactory level of comprehension and experience in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.
- Computer literacy with competence in Microsoft Office components required.
- Demonstrated ability to speak clearly, write proficiently.

Preferred Qualifications |
- At least one (1) year of related experience in a medical office setting preferred.
NJDHSS HIV counselor certification strongly preferred.- Knowledge of Newark community preferred. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment |
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing.
- No special vision requirements.
- Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (10) pounds.
- Assists with transportation services in the clinic.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Office environment.
- Moderate noise.
- Occasional (less than 1/3 of time) exposure to blood-borne pathogens that requires use of personal protective equipment.
