Through a student-centered, equity-driven approach, OSIL delivers transformational, experiential learning opportunities that promote personal growth, civic responsibility, and community engagement.
The office serves as the central hub for leadership development and student engagement, supporting and advising over 500 student organizations, student government, and leadership development. With a focus on inclusion, education, and advocacy, OSIL collaborates across the university to curate meaningful social, service-oriented, cultural, and educational experiences that enrich campus life and foster a strong sense of belonging.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Director, Student Affairs for The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership. Reporting directly to the Director of Student Involvement and Leadership, this role is central to cultivating a culture of inclusive student representation, effective self-governance, and meaningful engagement across a campus of over 40,000 undergraduates.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Provides direct oversight and support to Rutgers University Student Assembly (RUSA), RUSA Allocations Board (responsible for managing a $2 million annual student activity budget), and the Governing Councils.
  • Supports university-wide student governance initiatives alongside the Executive Director of Student Centers and Activities and Director of Student Involvement and Leadership.
  • Handles strategic advising, budget and platform management, student leadership development, and advancing student voice and advocacy at the highest levels of campus decision-making.
  • Serves as one of the administrative advisors for student organizations registered within Student Involvement and Leadership.
  • Serves as the administrator for the Student Engagement platform, currently Anthology.
  • Handles the oversight and management involved with the platform.
  • Creates training materials, instructional manuals and policies and procedures for the use of the platform.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in student Affairs, Higher Education, Education, or a closely related field, plus three (3) years of professional experience in community engagement, service-learning, student advising, leadership development, program planning, curriculum design, and budget management; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • A valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and a strong commitment to fostering inclusive and equitable environments.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, interpersonal, and intercultural communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage complex projects, and adapt to a fast-paced, high-demand work environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with database systems and student information platforms.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently, while also being highly collaborative within a team-oriented office and broader university setting.
  • Prior experience with event logistics, training facilitation, student leadership program delivery, and risk management processes.
  • Familiarity with student development theory, learning outcome assessment, and student-centered programming.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in learning management systems (e.g., Canvas), collaborative platforms and digital engagement tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, analyze financial data, and utilize tools such as spreadsheets, databases, and project management software.
  • Experience with marketing and communications, including basic design software and social media platforms.
  • Prior experience in facilitating team-building activities, leadership retreats, or leadership curriculum development.
  • Proficiency in standard office software including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and Adobe Creative tools.
  • Familiarity with event management platforms, survey tools (e.g., Qualtrics), student engagement platforms, and digital media creation tools (e.g., iMovie, Canva).
  • Use of learning and assessment systems such as Canvas, Anthology, or similar platforms.
  • Occasional use of AV equipment, university vehicles, and event-related logistics tools.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to lift 25lbs
  • Position requires frequent movement between campus locations, setup for programs, and extended periods of standing during events.

Special Conditions

  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as needed for events, programs, or training.
  • Must be eligible to drive university vehicles for off-site programs and service trips.
  • Clean Driving Record.
