Job Title: Machining Technician Department: MERC College/Division: Mercer Engineering Research Center Primary Job Posting Location: Warner Robins, GA 31088-7810 Job Details: Mercer Engineering Research Center (MERC), a research institute of Mercer University, provides high quality engineering, scientific, and technical support services to both government and private industry customers. The Machining Technician provides support to engineers in the areas of electrical, electronic, mechanical, or machining assembly, disassembly, repair, and maintenance under the supervision of the respective chief engineer. RESPONSIBILITIES: -Ability to read and interpret technical data packages. -Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools -Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly to ensure that the end product meets the technical data package requirements. -Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective equipment -Ability to perform tasks without difficulty and attention to detail. -Measuring and cutting materials to specifications. -Check finished work to verify that it falls within tolerances marked on the prints. -Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety. -Maintain a clean, organized work area. -Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. -Fabricates mechanical parts or tools from engineering drawings. -Performs diagnostic tests of mechanical in conjunction with engineering. -Performs mechanical assessments and makes recommendations to engineers. -Assembles, disassembles, repairs, and maintains mechanical systems or subsystems. -Setup and operate mills, lathes, drill press and other manual equipment. -Setup, adjust, and operate CNC controlled machines to perform close tolerance turning, milling, and deburr operations. -Proof and edit programs and manually program machining instructions into computer. -Reviews blueprint for machining to be done and plans sequence of operations. -Performs other job related duties in related areas as assigned. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: -U.S. Citizenship -Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance. -High school diploma or GED and technical certifications in the respective technical area. -Must be able to work in a standing position for long period of time. -Will comply with all quality and safety standards and rules. -Complete work on time and under budget. -Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications using precision measuring instruments. -Must be able to maintain tolerance and finishes to engineering and manufacturing specifications. -Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and proficiency at reading precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators. -Must be able to problem-solve and work with engineering to determine fabrication options and plans. -Able to multi-task and work multiple requirements as needed. -Must have knowledge of cutting tools and inserts for turning, drilling, boring, threading, and milling. -Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. -Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines. -Calculates and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and programs tool path, depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media. -Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: -Ability to obtain university approved driver card -Experience in application of anodizing, primer, paint, etc -Certified forklift operator is preferred. Final rank will be determined on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Application must include a cover letter and resume.
