HJF is seeking a Senior Director, HJF - San Antonio to work under the direction of HJF's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (EVP/COO) and collaborate closely with the VP of Strategic Initiatives, the VP of USU Operations and VP of Domestic Operations to provide onsite support and senior-level HJF representation for existing business, while also identifying new opportunities within, and associated with, HJF's San Antonio, TX, operations. The incumbent identifies key gaps in local and surrounding area's military medical research-both dependent and independent of US military partnership-then prepares and implements plans for HJF to best fill those gaps, including leading onsite efforts to capture targeted work, while extending Portfolio Leads' reach by supporting relevant organizational staff in furtherance of ensuing operational efforts. Mindful of HJF's operations in San Antonio that support clients' clinical efforts, medical research, and educational programs, the incumbent manages complex relationships with US military, other USG, and Civilian partner agencies in the San Antonio and surrounding region, with the goal of growing and diversifying funding opportunities that advance the HJF mission; achieving operational excellence; and facilitating key research endeavors. Significant local and regional travel required. The incumbent may participate in some clinical research activities as needed to achieve these goals.

This position will be in support of HJF operations in San Antonio, Texas.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Responsibilities



  • Responsible for building and maintaining a complex network of relationships with US Military and other USG officials, sponsor and partner staff, and community leaders in the San Antonio area. Helps communicate, shape, and implement HJF's strategic plan for San Antonio. Defines and represents the HJF brand that effectively grows programs for the organization in San Antonio. Through effective communication, engages, shapes and influences favorable HJF outcomes among both external and internal stakeholders.
  • Responsible for leading HJF's onsite efforts in San Antonio in a manner that both nests with the overall HJF mission, vision, and strategy defined by the HJF President and CEO and fully aligns with the operational plans of the Vice Presidents (VPs) of Strategic Initiatives, USU Operations and Domestic Operations. Coordinates program operations in San Antonio, mainly within DoD facilities, by maintaining positive relationships with site leadership, principal investigators and federal and private sponsors, while providing senior-level support and synchronized direction to HJF staff, and lower-tier contractor and partner organizations. Efforts are coordinated with home office senior leadership in a matrixed management fashion. The intent is for the incumbent to provide timely onsite engagements that effectively extend the responsible home office-based VPs' reach into San Antonio. The overarching plan, objectives and goals remain the purview of the VPs. Ensures appropriate management of regional operations, budgets, policies and internal controls, regulatory compliance, and effective use of resources.
  • Serves as onsite leader for a matrix-managed team supporting San Antonio. Provides integrated guidance and direction for staff comprising both business and scientific personnel. Operates in manner that optimizes cross-cutting efforts across business units, while preserving "solid line" reporting relationships between onsite staff and their home office supervisors within these same business units. Fosters a positive and collaborative workforce, ensuring consistent operational excellence by serving as a trusted leader and adept problem solver.
  • Support growth in other locations as identified. This may include training of staff.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Supervisory Responsibilities

* Direct Supervisor: Direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities.

Education and Experience



  • Doctoral Degree (MD, DO or PhD).
  • Minimum of 10+ years experience required.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Transparent and high-integrity leadership.
  • Thorough knowledge of, and experience with, clinical research at DoD facilities, including clinical trial management, and the procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks.
  • Knowledge of client relationship management and new business development with government contracts and/or cooperative agreements. Ability to lead capture management and support proposal development for new business opportunities.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Self-starter, capable of independent multi-tasking.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
  • Strong and effective written and oral communicator including in public speaking roles. Ability to adequately convey HJF's vision and strategic future to staff, partners, collaborators and donors.
  • Effective in use of common computer applications such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, cloud-based eRegulatory platforms and e-mail.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.


Licenses and Certifications



  • If a physician, licensure to practice medicine within the continental United States, and board-certified or board-eligible in a medical discipline.


Work Environment

* This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Compensation

* The annual salary range for this position is $173,600 - $248,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
