Job Summary

The Resident Assistant (RA) is a paraprofessional staff member in the Department of Housing and Residential Experience at Florida International University. The RA lives and works with a community of approximately 30 to 75 students in an assigned housing area on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC). The RA serves as a resource, role model, and peer educators to residents. The Residential Experience Coordinators (REC) and Assistant Residential Experience Coordinator (AREC) supervise RAs to create an engaged living-learning community, interact in 1on1 conversations with each resident on their floor, and to execute learning strategies to meet departmental goals of student personal development, community, wellness & belonging, and global responsibility. Most RA responsibilities occur during evening and weekend hours.

Administrative Duties

  • Reporting: Write and submit all reports or work orders promptly and efficiently. All incident reports are to be submitted shortly after conclusion of incident or by next day at 9:00am. Reports may include duty logs, panther chats, program proposals, incident reports, work orders, and other reports as designated by supervisor(s).
  • Engagement Hours: Schedule 10 hours in your building to engage with residents, build community, or complete RA responsibilities. RAs may build their own schedule based on their academic and extracurricular commitments between the hours of 9:00am 9:00pm.
  • Budgeting: Responsible for managing programming funds for Community Traditions and Wides throughout the year.
  • Other administrative tasks: Complete various administrative tasks such as maintenance requests, duty logs, responding to emails, check ins and check outs.

Crisis Management

  • Duty: Serve in an on-call rotation in their respective building (or designated area) on campus during the evenings, weekends, and break periods. There will be an application process to be an RA during Winter Break and Spring Break period. The selected RAs will serve on call for all residential communities during those break periods. All communities remain open year-round.
  • Duty Rounds: Conduct rounds of building(s) at 9pm and 11pm on weekdays (Sunday Wednesday) and 9pm, 11pm, and 1am on weekends (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday). Hours are subject to change based on community or departmental need.
  • Crisis Response: Understand and respond according to the on-call manual when emergencies arise in their building. Be available to residents and able to always respond to emergencies when present in the building.
  • Upholding and Abiding Policies: Demonstrate an understanding and adherence to university and departmental policies. Communicate and support the policies as outlined in the Code of Conduct and Residential Policies & Procedures. RAs are responsible for knowing, understanding, and supporting additional policies, procedures, and expectations as they are communicated. Actively address and document violations or behaviors causing harm, safety, and/or security concerns to self or others.

Community Development

  • Community Building: Be available and visible in community and spend quality time with residents in the community during non-duty hours and while on-duty.
  • Programming: Plan and attend community traditions, wides, and other activities in the halls or on campus.
  • Campus Resources: Be knowledgeable and refer residents to campus resources as needed.
  • Campus Partners: Attend, promote, and collaborate with various offices or departments on campus. Include campus partners in programming opportunities.
  • Presence and Visibility: Maximize time spend in the building by utilizing the following strategies to engage residents: office hours, greeting residents at the front desk or in the building, using common spaces for programming or social gatherings, and attending programs. RAs should report to supervisor(s) any trends or concerns they notice throughout their community or in the building regularly.
  • Departmental Participation: Demonstrate departmental and campus pride in their communities and in other spaces on campus.

Professional Development

  • Peer Mentorship: Serve in a supportive and mentoring capacity to residents and fellow RAs as an experienced member of the FIU community.
  • Customer Service: Provide a quality and inviting experience while interacting with students, residents, staff, parents, and other university stakeholders.
  • Advocacy: Appropriately and professionally communicate when there are concerns or questions as it relates to the residential experience. Utilizing proper chain of command to address issues as they arise.
  • Confidentiality: Ensure confidentiality as it pertains to all functions of the RA position.
  • Attendance and Participation: RAs are expected to attend and actively participate in all training, meetings, and in-services as indicated by their supervisor(s) or operational calendar.
  • Peer Relationships: Foster intentional relationships with fellow RAs including the ability to challenge and support peers.
  • Timeliness: Arrive on time or early to all meetings, shifts, and other job-related events. Ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Written & Verbal Communication: Respond appropriately and in a timely manner to all written and verbal communication, including calendar invites, emails, and Teams messages. This included demonstrating active listening skills.
  • Attitude towards department/community: Display a positive attitude and support towards all staff, buildings, and Housing & Residential Experience department.

Desired Qualifications

The following criteria must be met for a student to be given initial consideration as a candidate for the RA position:

  • Must have lived on-campus at FIU (MMC or BBC) or any college institution for at least one semester (Fall, Spring or Summer) before starting the position.
  • Enrolled as a full-time (12-18 hours) undergraduate or full-time (9 hours) graduate student at FIU and making progress towards graduation.
  • Undergraduate students must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintain a 2.5 cumulative and semester GPA for the duration of their employment. Graduate students must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintain a 3.0 cumulative and semester GPA for the duration of their employment. Grade checks will be completed at the end of every semester.
  • Must be and remain in good standing with the Department and University, including no significant or recent student conduct history. All Housing Student Assistants will consent to conduct checks prior to hiring and at the end of every semester.
  • Have a good student conduct record, defined as not having been involved in serious violations or incidents (including marijuana, alcohol, and physical violence), not be a repeat offender of policy violations, and not have received housing exclusion status.
  • Prior to employment, must successfully complete a background check and fingerprinting as per the Housing and Residential Experience requirement.
  • Must be available every Thursday from 3:30pm - 5:00pm at MMC during the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters for departmental and staff meetings. RAs are not permitted to take classes during this time.
  • Limit evening commitments and not enroll in classes that start after 4:30pm on more than two (2) evenings per week.
  • For Fall RAs (August Start) August 1, 2025, through May 2, 2026 New RAs: Must be available for the anticipated move in date of Friday, August 1 at 9:00am and be available for training up to the first day of classes; no excused absences from student staff training or move in will be granted.
  • Returning RAs: Must be available for the anticipated start date of Friday, August 8, 2025, at 9:00am and be available for training up to the first day of classes; no excused absences from training or move in will be granted.
Who May Apply

  • Students enrolled at FIU, who have been awarded Federal Work Study (FWS) as part of their Financial Aid Award package.
  • Student must be enrolled with a minimum of six (6) credit hours in a course of study leading to a degree or a Financial Aid eligible certificate, during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
  • Upon credits decreasing, award being canceled, or graduating, FWS employment must end.
Work Schedule

  • RAs live where they work and fulfill the responsibilities of the position at various times during the week (days, evenings, weekends and some holidays).
  • The RA position requires RAs to participate in an on-call duty rotation, and while on call RAs are not permitted to leave the area they are assigned to work.
  • Limit evening commitments and not enroll in classes that start after 4:30pm on more than two (2) evenings per week.
  • RAs are expected to be in their RA room between 11:00pm -7:30am (Sunday nights - Friday mornings) and 1:00am - 7:30am (Saturday mornings & Sunday mornings).
  • Must be available every Thursday from 3:30pm - 5:00pm at MMC during the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters for departmental and staff meetings. RAs are not permitted to take classes during this time.
Advertised Salary

  • $14.00/Hour
  • By nature of the position, the RA is required to live on campus, and therefore, is provided with private accommodations.
