DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Experimental Aquarium Technician will perform technical laboratory procedures to support experimental aquarium systems in controlled environmental conditions.

Key responsibilities include: assisting with the setup and maintenance of coral spawning tanks, conducting standard aquarium care tasks, and performing basic system maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and three years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two years of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of ichthyology and experimental aquarium systems.

  • Knowledge of aquarium system components (e.g., pumps, filters, lighting, heaters).

  • Experience in the maintenance of coral spawning tanks.

  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain aquatic life support systems, including the operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of pumps, filters, lighting, and environmental sensors to ensure optimal aquarium conditions.

  • Ability to observe and report on the condition and behavior of aquatic animals.

  • Skill in measuring and adjusting seawater chemistry and environmental conditions in aquarium systems.

  • Knowledge of marine animal husbandry practices, including the preparation of various food types and feeding protocols for multiple marine species, such as thawing frozen foods and hatching live feeds like artemia.

  • Ability to accurately record and organize digital data, including servicing and maintenance of all aquarium equipment.

  • Ability to follow instructions to assist with the setup, maintenance, and cleaning of specialized aquarium systems, such as those used for coral spawning.

  • Experience with laboratory protocols.

  • Ability to use basic laboratory tools and water testing instruments accurately.

  • Ability to interact using tact and diplomacy with diverse personalities including academic, staff, student, and volunteer employees as well as various institutions/organizations.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,035 - $63,099 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.40 - $30.22

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
