Job Summary
This is a one-year limited term position and is funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.

The individual in this position will be responsible for advising and improving the implementation and processes of breeding trials related to both cotton and soybean in Alabama. The individual will be expected to communicate regularly with the PI, visit research centers across the state and make recommendations on procedures, equipment and agronomic aspects of breeding trials.

Frequent travel throughout the state of Alabama will be required.

Essential Functions
Essential Functions include the following:


  • Develop or assist in the development of complex project proposals, plans, and protocols related to breeding practices.
  • Conduct non-routine experiments, investigations and/or studies related to programs and projects in pursuit of new knowledge, techniques and concepts.
  • Coordinate or assist in logistics of research to include equipment, materials, and labor needs.
  • Collect data/samples related to variety development.
  • Record, compile, process and analyze data/samples.
  • Will be responsible for advising the current research technician and graduate students on cotton breeding field activities and processes.
  • Assist in variety releases by helping with decision making and with communication/paperwork with AU technology transfer and private industry partners.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited institution in Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Breeding, or closely related field at the time employment begins PLUS (6) years of relevant work experience in plant breeding research practices, protocols, and agronomic field equipment.

Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications




Minimum Skills and Abilities
Must have a demonstrated ability to collect, organize, and analyze data, excellent organizational and communication skills with demonstrated experience in managing a cotton breeding program.

The individual selected for this position must be able to travel and work in adverse conditions as field work is a large component of this position.
Minimum Technology Skills
Familiarity with Microsoft Office and experience with farm equipment technology as it relates to Almaco planters.
Minimum License and Certifications
Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to selection.
Desired Qualifications


Desired Qualifications

  • Additional years of experience as a commercial breeding program agronomist is highly desired.
  • Experience in variety development from initial crossing through cultivar release is desired.
