The starting base salary range for the Supervisor- SLD Group Underwriting $63,000 to $90,000. Actual salaries will vary by geographic location and are based on factors such as candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, competencies, and company tenure & equity. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan based on company performance and individual performance.

Supervisor - Group Underwriting Overview

The Supervisor Group Underwriting oversees a team of Underwriters who conduct risk assessment and selection for various insurance products, including Supplemental, Life and Disability, and Worksite products. This role involves supervising, establishing and enforcing underwriting standards and guidelines and ensuring accurate verification and documentation of applicant information. The Supervisor assists staff with underwriting problems, monitors and evaluates Underwriter performance, and makes determinations on large or complex applications.

Essential Duties:



  • Supervises a team of Underwriters
  • Establishes and enforces underwriting standards and guidelines
  • Ensures that Underwriters accurately verify and document the appropriate group information
  • Assists staff with the resolution of underwriting problems
  • Monitors and evaluates staff performance
  • Assesses risk and produces rates for new groups with advanced levels of autonomy
  • Prepares formal proposals and renewals
  • Completes annual renewals for all products and performs related maintenance tasks
  • Services current group clients including benefit changes, reporting, and response to telephone and email inquiries
  • Verifies sold case data including final rating
  • Provides training and mentoring to underwriting and sales staff
  • Leads special projects and/or SME assignments
  • Uses knowledge of formulas to recommend alternatives when deviations are necessary
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Advanced knowledge of group supplemental, life, disability, medical, and worksite products
  • Advanced understanding of underwriting principles and rating methodology
  • Demonstrated ability to apply experience rating formulas for all products
  • Advanced MS Office skills
  • Strong math and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively establish priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously


Required Education and Experience:



  • Bachelor's Degree, or related experience
  • 3-5 years of underwriting experience
  • Or, equivalent military experience


Preferred Education and Experience:



  • Previous Leadership or management experience preferably in Underwriting
  • LOMA, HIAA, AHIP
