Promega Corporation
United States, Wisconsin, Madison
Jul 25, 2025
Job Description

At Promega, our IT team is dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service, ensuring the stability of our systems, and driving operational efficiency across the organization. We operate as both a service provider and a trusted partner, working closely with business units to align technology with initiatives and goals. Our mission is to provide seamless, reliable, and innovative solutions that not only support day-to-day operations but also enable growth and transformation. By building strong relationships and delivering value, we strive to become a true partner in Promega's success, ensuring that technology serves as a key enabler for future business opportunities.

YOUR ROLE: Join Promega's IT Emerging Technology team as an AI Engineer / Data Scientist embedded in Manufacturing Operations. You'll be part of a tight-knit, agile team of 5-7 professionals, leading high-impact data science and AI initiatives that drive our Operational AI vision forward. In this role, you'll design and scale AI solutions using tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Databricks and code to reduce cost, increase throughput, and enhance product quality across scientists, planners, instrument builders, facilities, logistics, and supplychain. We're looking for someone with proven experience (this is not an internship role) who can translate between technical capabilities and real-world operational needs. You'll collaborate closely with teams on the ground and provide quarterly on-site support to Promega's manufacturing center in San Luis Obispo, California. If you thrive on blending innovation with practicality and are excited to shape how AI transforms life science manufacturing, we'd love to meet you.

JOB OBJECTIVE: Serve as a hybrid AI Engineer / Data Scientist embedded within Promega's Manufacturing Operations team. Design, deliver, and operationalize scalable AI solutions that improve throughput, quality, and cost-efficiency. This role acts as a translator between AI technology and key business functions including planning, instrumentation, facilities, logistics, and supply chain, supporting Promega's Operational AI vision.

CORE DUTIES:

1. Accelerate adoption of emerging technologies by providing second-level support, leading training, promoting usage, and ensuring a smooth transition to long-term operational ownership.

2. Discover high-impact use cases by shadowing colleagues, mapping workflows, and translating operational pain points into AI/analytics solutions.

3. Design experiments and perform statistical analyses to validate hypotheses, quantify impact, and guide iterative improvement.

4. Build, deploy, and maintain production-grade AI pipelines that integrate with SAP S4, eQMS, ELN/LIMS, IIoT sensors, and other source-of-truth systems.

5. Operationalize OCR and Document AI solutions to convert scanned batch records and PDFs into 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, labeled datasets.

6. Develop predictive models on LC/MS, chromatography, and instrument logs to detect process drift and enable real-time alerts.

7. Automate trend analyses that link emerging deviations to historical CAPAs or non-conformances, shortening time to root cause.

8. Prototype in discovery cycles to test value, usability, feasibility, and viability before full delivery.

9. Coach teams to migrate analyses from Excel to modern tooling (Databricks, Power BI, Jupyter) and define tidy data standards (CSV/Parquet/JSON).

10. Continuously learn and teach, sharing the latest advances in AI/ML and advocating for practical adoption across Promega.

11. Pitch innovative ideas to executive sponsors and champion a culture of experimentation.

12. Demonstrates inclusion through their own words and actions and is accountable for a safe workspace. Acts with kindness, curiosity and respect for others.

13. Embracing and being open to incorporating Promega's 6 Emotional & Social Intelligence (ESI) core principles in daily work.

14. Understands and complies with ethical, legal and regulatory requirements applicable to our business.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

1. 2+ years of professional experience in AI/ML engineering and applied data science.

2. Experience in a manufacturing or distribution environment.

3. Hands-on OCR / Document AI experience.

4. Proficiency building software that uses different file formats and APIs.

5. Expertise in machine learning algorithms, statistical modeling, and experimental design.

6. Fluency in Python (or R), SQL, and at least one cloud analytics stack-preferably Azure.

7. Confidence with Azure infrastructure, OpenAI API, Databricks and SQL.

8. Proven ability to identify high-value opportunities and deliver measurable outcomes.

9. Strong problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.

10. Experience educating non-technical colleagues on technology concepts.

11. Awareness of regulatory and compliance requirements in a business setting.

12. Demonstrated aptitude for coaching and building trust with cross-functional teams.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Experience with generative AI / LLM platforms (e.g., Llama, DeepSeek, Gemini, Gemma, Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, AWS Bedrock).

2. Experience with multi-agent GPT/RAG system design and prompt version control.

3. Certification in SAP BTP AI/ML or equivalent manufacturing platform.

4. Familiarity with ISA 95, OPC UA, or MQTT for industrial connectivity.

5. Experience with instrument data formats (e.g., mzML, chromatograms) and ELN/LIMS APIs.

6. Working knowledge of GxP and 21 CFR Part 11 compliance.

7. Track record integrating models into digital platforms or automation workflows.

8. Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (preferred, not required).

9. Modern front-end web development experience.

10. Experience with Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence, etc.).

11. Familiarity with ISO 27001 and 42001.
