Seasonal /Temporary Animal Keeper Applicant Pool - Elephant Department

Description: CZBG's Elephant Trek team is looking for qualified individuals interested in being considered for Non-FT keeper positions. Those selected for consideration will be placed in an applicant pool for a period of up to 1 year. They may be contacted for seasonal or temporary positions as they become available during that time.

Summary: This position encompasses skilled professional and technical work in the routine husbandry of CZBG's 8 elephants and the cleaning and maintenance of their barn and yards. The two positions have varying levels of responsibility and pay: Seasonal Keepers work 25 hr/wk for up to 10 months at a rate of $15/hr; Temporary Keepers may work up to 32 hr/wk for up to 11 months at a rate of $21.73/hr. Duties may include related tasks and/or unrelated duties as assigned.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:



  • Clean animal yards, holding areas, service areas, public sections and grounds
  • Identify maintenance issues and correct or repair each as required, reporting non-correctable maintenance issues, including potential safety hazards.
  • Maintain records of health, behavior, enrichment, operant conditioning and visitor engagement
  • Prepare and follow prescribed diets and feeding procedures
  • Perform operant conditioning and enrichment programs when instructed
  • Assist in the training of volunteers, interns, and vocational students
  • Assist FT animal staff with animal care, observations, and medication administration
  • Provide engaging interactions with guests
  • Interact with the public and Zoo staff in a professional and courteous manner


Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will:



  • Have demonstrated knowledge and interest in elephant management and care
  • Have relevant experience working with large animals and familiarity with animal husbandry
  • Show an understanding of operant conditioning and enrichment, or an interest in developing those skillsets where appropriate.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and problem-solving skills, while applying good judgment, to deliver animal care and guest experiences that meet the highest standards
  • Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers (including staff, interns, students and volunteers) and public in a professional manner
  • Demonstrate a positive and team-oriented attitude


Working Conditions: Employment is contingent upon passing a post-offer, pre-employment drug & nicotine screen. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, and grasp objects. In addition, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. They must be able to lift & move 50 pounds without mechanical assistance They must possess a valid driver's license (and insurable to drive a Zoo vehicle). The ability to work a flexible schedule (including holidays, weekends and evenings) is required
