Position Overview
A full-time lab/field research technician position is available to support research in the ecology and evolution of plant-microbiome interactions at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS). The research technician will be responsible for maintaining projects associated with field experiments, greenhouse and/or growth chamber experiments characterizing plant traits, plant-microbiome interactions and their influence on plant adaptation, plant species coexistence, plant community structure and productivity, and/or soil ecosphere development. A successful candidate will be extremely organized and efficient with time management.
Job Description
- 60% - Supervising, monitoring, and executing plant-microbiome experiments (in the greenhouse, growth chambers, and/or field) including set up, maintenance, harvesting, data entry and analysis
- 20% - Maintaining equipment and supply inventories, including ordering repairs and replacements as needed
- 20% - Entering or supervising entry of results into databases and maintaining data from experiments
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in biology, botany, ecology, agronomy, range science, or related field.
- 1 year of experience in field research as a field worker, field/lab technician, or investigator, as evidenced by application materials.
- Prior experience with plant identification (through experience and/or education), as evidenced in application materials.
- Prior experience using a microscope and other sensitive laboratory equipment through education or experience, as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous experience that demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique (through education or experience), as demonstrated in application materials.
- Experience in the use of word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office), as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous work experience which required written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in biology, botany, ecology, agronomy, range science or related field.
- Previous work experience which required a working knowledge of Midwestern and/or Great Plains flora, specifically tallgrass prairie species, as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous experience propagating plants from seed, as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous experience in database management, as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous experience in project management, as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous experience managing people, as evidenced by application materials.
