Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead Engineer to provide strategic leadership and technical expertise in support of the StepWise Application and broader Java Engineering initiatives. This role is critical to the continued success of our enterprise platforms, combining application ownership with hands-on software development responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned.

The Lead Engineer will be accountable for the overall performance, stability, and strategic alignment of the StepWise platform. This includes serving as the primary liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams to ensure the application evolves in line with organizational objectives. Additionally, the role involves contributing to enterprise software development efforts, with a focus on Java-based technologies.

The Optum StepWise Automated Rating System is a sophisticated suite of enterprise applications designed to automate rating and underwriting processes, support block-of-business management, and enable rapid deployment of rate changes across the organization. The platform supports all lines of business and product types, serving as a centralized repository for rating, underwriting, and business rules.

Key Accountabilities:



  • Provide technical leadership in Java development, establishing and promoting best practices across the engineering team.
  • Design and implement clean, efficient, and maintainable code using Java, MuleSoft APIs, and modern front-end frameworks such as Angular and React.
  • Mentor and support junior developers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing engineering culture.
  • Ensure the StepWise application aligns with business goals and operational requirements.
  • Oversee the full application lifecycle, including deployment, maintenance, and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor system performance and user experience through key performance indicators.
  • Ensure compliance with security standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage application changes, including feature enhancements and system upgrades.
  • Provide user support and lead incident resolution efforts.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation for the application.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business stakeholders, IT, and external vendors.
  • Uphold data integrity and ensure adherence to data governance policies.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in Java software development.
  • Proven expertise in Java development and related technologies.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments - SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with content management systems and enterprise search technologies.
  • Proficiency in open-source frameworks such as Angular, React, and Node.js.
  • Experience developing web and mobile applications, including those built with Flutter.
  • API development experience using MuleSoft or Java.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, including CI/CD and deployment processes.


This position is an Office role, which requires an employee to work onsite at our Minnetonka, MN or Madison, WI office, on average, 3 days per week.

The full salary range for this position is $98,400 - $168,600. Annual salary range placement will depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, education, work experience, applicable certifications and/or licensure, the position's scope and responsibility, internal pay equity and external market salary data. In addition to base compensation, this position may be eligible for incentive plan compensation in addition to base salary.
