Science Magazine, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), seeks a Senior Biomedicine Reporter to join our news team.

The Senior Biomedicine Reporter writes about research on the origins and treatment of diseases, especially chronic conditions including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, diabetes and heart disease, for a readership of scientists and interested non-specialists. The beat also includes U.S. policies and politics relevant to biomedical researchers as well as issues within the biomedical community, such as lab culture and misconduct. The reporter is a prolific generator of story ideas with broad knowledge of the field and a network of sources.

While our preference is for a hybrid role, we will consider remote candidates.

What You'll Do



  • Monitor journals and preprints for new developments. Cultivate sources, monitor scientific social media and attend conferences.
  • Report and write stories in multiple forms including: short breaking-news pieces for the dally online news site; longer trend and news analysis stories for the print publication, and feature length narratives of 2500 words or more.
  • Attend daily news meetings, contribute story ideas, and discuss coverage.
  • Serve as a mentor to junior colleagues and a resource to others reporting on biomedical topics.
  • Work with visuals team to help conceive graphics and advise on photo choices for stories.
  • Work with editors and copyeditors to get stories into final form


Minimum Requirements



  • At least five years of science reporting in a competitive environment. Experience writing on short, medium and long-term deadlines in a variety of formats including breaking news, news analysis, and features.
  • Deep knowledge of one or more one subject areas in biomedical research. Familiarity with neuroscience is a plus, as is a bachelor's degree or higher in a biological science or a related field.
  • Good story judgment.
  • Familiarity with government policies and agencies that affect biomedical research.
  • Ability to work collegially with editors, copyeditors, and art staff.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to attend conferences and report stories.

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $100,000 - $115,000 per year. AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.

Any actual offer of employment, reflecting the total compensation package and benefits, will be made in the sole discretion of AAAS and will be based on a variety of factors, including years of experience, depth of experience, and other relevant factors. AAAS reserves the right to amend or modify its employment benefits and compensation structure at any time.
