DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Therapeutic Activities Worker within the Department of Corrections, your primary role will involve overseeing and documenting the progress of inmates as they work towards their therapeutic recreation objectives. You will play a vital part in the planning, development, and execution of both individual and group therapeutic recreation programs. This includes conducting formal assessments to evaluate inmates' functioning levels, strengths, and needs, which will inform the creation of tailored therapeutic recreation goals to be presented to a multi-disciplinary treatment team. You will determine effective strategies for achieving these therapeutic objectives and ensure that inmate activities are harmonized with other treatment modalities. Additionally, you will facilitate individual and group therapeutic recreation sessions, providing essential instruction, guidance, and support to inmates. Your responsibilities will also encompass the implementation and evaluation of therapeutic recreation programs, allowing you to recommend adjustments that align with the unique needs, interests, and abilities of each inmate. Furthermore, you will engage in crisis intervention and resolution as challenges arise within the unit, ensuring a supportive and constructive environment for all participants.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40-hour work week
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Sunday - Thursday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of experience providing therapeutic activities for individuals with physical, medical, or cognitive disabilities; or

  • A bachelor's degree with major coursework in therapeutic recreation; physical education; vocational rehabilitation; vocational education or counseling; art, music, dance, or occupational therapies; or a related human services field; or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
