The North Carolina Arboretum is seeking a (Temporary) Part-Time Development Assistant to provide support to our Philanthropic and Donor Relations Programs. The Development Assistant position will consist of administrative and customer-service duties that will enhance the success of our frontline fundraising team. The Development Assistant should have a high degree of aptitude and professionalism, at times coordinating with multiple staff members and keeping a solutions-oriented mindset. This role requires excellent people skills as a point of direct contact with members and donors. The pay rate is $18.00 per hour.

The position will primarily work 20-25 hours per week on specified weekdays and have the potential for evening and weekend shifts during Development events. The opportunity to work additional hours may come available at a later date. This position is considered 'temporary' under the State of North Carolina policies and may only work 11 out of 12 months each year.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Logging and record-keeping for mailed check donations.
  • Digital and physical filing of donation-related materials.
  • Acknowledgement letters for philanthropic gifts using a mail merge program.
  • Answering phone calls and emails related to donor relations.
  • Assist with multiple mailings throughout the year.
  • Perform back-up gift processing in the donor database when necessary.
  • Support Development events and donor meetings throughout the year.
  • Track RSVPs and create nametags for Development events.
  • Monitor the general Development email account.
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Abilities

Ability to sit or remain stationary at a desk for extended periods of time. Frequent use of hands and fingers for data entry, operating a computer, calculator, and other office equipment. Occasionally required to lift and move boxes or files up to 20 pounds. Regular use of keyboard and mouse for extended periods of time. Work is performed in an indoor setting, with occasional work in an outdoor setting.

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The NC Arboretum is a 434-acre public garden with a mission to "cultivate connections between people, plants and places." Members and donors of The North Carolina Arboretum Society support 65 acres of cultivated gardens and seasonal landscape exhibits, 10 miles of natural wooded trails for walking, hiking
and biking, rotating art, science and educational exhibits, improvements to Arboretum facilities and special projects, as well as important conservation and youth education programs.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
High School Education or equivalent; and demonstrated success in providing outstanding customer service. Basic knowledge of computer skills and data entry.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
Previous experience with non-profit administration or fundraising best practices.
