Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director, Hospital Operations is responsible for the strategic, administrative, operational, financial, and business management of his/her/their Service Line(s)/department(s). This includes developing and implementing the program(s)' strategic and financial growth under direction of the Service Line Vice President and in collaboration with the medical and surgical directors for the respective programs. The Director, Hospital Operations is responsible for leading the long-term development and success of his/her/their SL/program/department (s), including continuously identifying, developing, and implementing methods to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, safety, financial performance, philanthropic opportunities, patient satisfaction, and the quality of the services provided to patients, family members, and referring physicians. The Director, Hospital Operations guides subordinate managers and leads them to achieving well-defined goals and objectives in a metrics focused, performance based model of healthcare delivery.. The Director, Hospital Operations is well versed in the community and abreast market trends within their areas of oversight. Under the direction of the Service Line Vice President, the Director, Hospital Operations manages the relationships with pertinent Affiliates.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Program Management and Execution

  • Works closely with physician leaders and administrators within assigned SL/department(s) to manage clinical operations across the continuum of care (ambulatory, perioperative, and inpatient).
  • Represents his/her/their SL/department(s) in strategic business and growth initiatives.
  • Serves as delegate for Service Line Vice President as needed.
  • Oversees performance improvement projects related to increased productivity, operational efficiency, asset utilization, capacity management, cost structure/performance, and quality in order to meet organizational objectives
  • Responsible for compliance with all regulatory requirements, including CMS, DOH, and The Joint Commission
  • Develops and implements the annual capital and operating budget to include a review system for tracking and controlling all department revenues and expenses to ensure the effective allocation, utilization, and management of funds.
  • Recruits, hires, orients, supervises, coaches, evaluates, educates, and disciplines staff within the assigned span of control
  • Manages the planning and implementation of developing additional programs as part of his/her/their SL/department(s)' growth strategy
  • Responds timely and effectively to unplanned circumstances, demands, and challenges facing the programs of oversight
  • Works closely with contract management department to ensure up-to-date and favorable payor contracts in addition to maintaining status and applying for Center of Excellence designations.
  • On call 24/7/365 as SL/ program administrator unless alternative coverage is delegated and communicated

Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Oversees and is responsible for key performance indicators (KPI) and disseminates information to key stakeholders
  • Oversees and is responsible compliance with CMS, DOH and The Joint Commission requirements
  • Develops business plans and proformas

Communication Activities

  • Develops strong, interdisciplinary teamwork and communication among program personnel, including physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, nutritionists, financial counselors, and performance improvement personnel.
  • Prepares concise, creative, professional summaries of analyses and plans.
  • Builds strong working relationships with community-based physicians who refer patients to Jefferson and assures optimal service delivery and transition of these patients back to these physicians (as applicable).

EDUCATIONAL/ TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

Master's Business/Health Administration Required

ADDITIONAL TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree in business administration, healthcare administration, or another related is required.

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES/REGISTRATION:

Certification in LEAN/change management techniques preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Years of Experience

Five to seven (5-7) years

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of healthcare management experience with demonstrated proficiency in operations, human resources, business planning, and financial management; previous experience in leading a transplant program is required.
  • Previous billing and reimbursement experience, familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, and thirty party payor rules and regulations preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
