Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Chemical Hygiene Officer, the Chemical Inventory Assistant will work as part of a team to maintain & update UCSF's chemical inventory system. Duties include performing updates of existing chemical inventories using handheld scanners; assisting with setup of new chemical inventories; barcoding chemical containers and entering information such as chemical name, physical state, & container types into the inventory system using a mobile app; providing technical support and ad hoc training to end users of the inventory system; and documenting issues discovered during the inventory reconciliation process.

Chemical Inventory Assistants will receive routine training on the hazards and safe use and handling of chemicals by attending safety meetings led by the Chemical Hygiene Officer and other EHS personnel. The job requires attention to detail and the ability to follow detailed standard operating procedures. Knowledge of chemistry and a basic understanding of the hazards associated with handling various types of chemicals is preferred.

This position will lead to deeper understanding of chemical knowledge regarding hazard classification, segregation of incompatible chemicals, and chemical inventory systems used in research. Assistants will have an opportunity to receive mentorship from EHS personnel with experience in academia and private industry and interact with graduate level researchers in research labs at UCSF while performing inventory updates. This position is ideal for someone with some college level chemistry with an interest in pursuing graduate school or a career in chemical industry, industrial hygiene, environmental health & safety, or other related field.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $60,100 - $90,100 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field, with some coursework in chemistry and related lab, or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize work
  • Written and interpersonal communication skills to communicate effectively
  • Skill in following basic instructions and providing input and feedback as required
  • Basic skills to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required

Preferred Qualifications


  • Basic knowledge / understanding of relevant EH&S field(s), and related regulations
  • Knowledge of chemical hazards and how to safely handle them
