Job Summary

Milwaukee Public Schools seeks exceptional Instructional Coach: Language Assessor candidates who are highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders.

The Lau Compliance Center Language Assessor will administer, score, and enter the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) screener assessments and enroll EL students in the appropriate Bilingual and/or ESL program(s) within MPS. This position will engage in enrollment processes and procedures, in accordance with English Learner (EL) federal and state laws, with families in English, Spanish, and other languages through an interpretation service. The Lau Compliance Center Language Assessor will report to the Enrollment Manager and provide EL information to Central Services staff, programs, divisions, departments, offices, school staff, and the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) for compliance reports at the request of their supervisor in collaboration with the Department of Multilingual Multicultural Education.

Physical Demands:

General office environment, must be able to handle lifting 10-15lbs. with standing, bending. The Lau Compliance associate will be expected to travel to schools to administer language assessments to students throughout the school year as well as during the ACCESS testing window as needed.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience as a fully certified teacher is required.
  • Valid professional license #1395 or #1023 is required.

Experience Requirements:

  • At least five years of experience with supporting EL families and/or EL students is required.
  • At least two years of experience with data entry is preferred

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts initial interview and language assessments identified by the DPI and/or the Department of Multilingual Multicultural Education for appropriate Bilingual, ESL, and Newcomer Center school placement.
  • Applies knowledge of language development, program entrance criteria, and Bilingual, ESL, and Newcomer programs within MPS to determine proper placement.
  • Performs student enrollment processes and procedures in accordance with EL policies as well as State and Federal guidance.
  • Administers the Home Language Survey, other documents relative to potential EL students, and pertinent assessments with an understanding of various cultures and the use of interpretation services as needed.
  • Inputs and corrects EL data in Infinite Campus, Wisconsin Information System for Education (WISE), Data Recognition Corporation (DRC), and other platforms to ensure accurate reporting. This includes, but is not limited to, permission, refusals, flags, codes, errors, and language settings across program and non-program schools.
  • Demonstrates competence in navigating cross-cultural and linguistic interactions, schedules appointments, and uses an interpretation service as needed to communicate effectively with all families.
  • Provides support to parents/guardians, schools, and district staff relative to student enrollment processes and procedures, including related forms and assessments.
  • Reviews and processes online applications.
  • Works collaboratively with staff, resettlement agencies, and staff within the department to promote effective communication with families, students, and staff.
  • Audits school rosters for services and proper documentation of program eligibility students and communicates findings to administrators in the various departments affected.
  • Assists the ESL and bilingual education curriculum specialists in gathering and inputting information for program, grant, or reporting purposes.
  • Collaborates with Multilingual Multicultural Education staff to identify Language Instruction Educational Program (LIEP) codes to enter into Infinite Campus.
  • Collaborates with Multilingual Multicultural Education, Research Assessment and Data, and other departments around EL data, especially in Infinite Campus, WISE, Dashboard, and DRC.
  • Assist the Department of Research, Assessment and Data with EL uploads for DRC and WISE as well as related questions during the ACCESS testing window.
  • Administers, scores, enters in Infinite Campus, and relays results of language assessments throughout the school year as well as during the ACCESS testing window which impacts federal requirements, accurate reporting, and funding for the district, travel to schools for support with these items may be necessary.
  • Obtains annual certification to administer EL assessments.
  • Conducts the misidentification process in consultation with the Department of Multilingual Multicultural Education.
  • Maintains and generates school enrollment data and reports pertinent to Bilingual, ESL, and Newcomer programs as needed.
  • Communicates with schools, offices, departments, divisions, and programs within MPS, particularly School Secretaries, Multilingual Multicultural Education, Research Assessment and Data, Student Services, Specialized Services, Transportation, and the Homeless Education Program.
  • Participates in all staff, team, and other meetings as requested.
  • Creates and delivers professional development around EL identification for various school and district staff.
  • Supports various school staff with EL best practices around communication and creating a welcoming environment, at the request of the director.
  • Supports small group instruction under the direction of a certified teacher of ELs, at the discretion of the director and Department of Multilingual Multicultural Education.
  • Assists with the EL identification process for English Learners in non-public schools, at the discretion of the director.
  • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
  • Performs and completes other duties as assigned.

This position is on the 2F - 200-day calendar.
