Job Summary

Milwaukee Public Schools seeks an exceptional Instructional Coach: English Learner Family Engagement candidate who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders.

The English Learner (EL) Family Engagement Instructional Coach is a non-evaluative, non-supervisory teacher position that will work at the district level to support district and school staff in their understanding of EL family and community needs. EL Instructional Coaches will collaborate closely with the Family and Community Engagement Specialist, Family and Community Engagement Associates, departmental team members, as well as district and school-level personnel to support strong outcomes for ELs. This position implements the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Family Engagement Framework in accordance with best practices for ELs, their family, and community so that MPS staff and families have what they need to be equal partners in student achievement and school improvement. The position works to initiate, align, and coordinate family and community partnerships with Parent Coordinators, educators, and other staff to meet the needs of students, families, and schools as outlined in policies, procedures, and resolutions. This position is assigned at the district level.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience in ESL or bilingual education within Milwaukee Public Schools as a fully certified teacher is required.
  • Valid professional license #1395 or #1023 is required.
  • National Board Certified or Master's degree preferred

Experience Requirements:

  • Strong background and knowledge of EL/Multilingual Learner pedagogy and best practices for educating students in K-12 education.
  • At least 2 years of experience in community relations/outreach, business development, volunteer management, fundraising, program management, or activities related to the essential functions.
  • Must be knowledgeable of community resources and services available to families.
  • Experience in providing professional development to adult learners.
  • Fluent in a language other than English: Spanish, Hmong, Rohigya, Karen, Burmese, Swahili, Arabic, Somali, Malay, or Farsi are preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates with school-based parent coordinators and other staff to plan and implement a family engagement framework that meets the needs of EL families.
  • Builds the capacity of schools to function as community schools by engaging and aligning business, community, and family partnerships around a common vision (school improvement plan).
  • Serves as liaison to other departments as assigned to increase cross-collaboration and information sharing around EL family and community engagement. Focused areas include: special education, refugee and immigrant services, safe haven, ESL, bilingual education, community schools, etc.
  • Works to assist parent coordinators, educators, principals, and other staff in engaging multiple voices in decision-making and implementation through school governance councils, parent groups, and the district advisory council.
  • Increases school knowledge on the culture of EL families and community by coordinating joint initiatives between schools and surrounding neighborhoods for better partnership and service delivery to all EL families.
  • Develops and implements training and/or tools for parent coordinators and other staff on EL family and community engagement best practices. Analyzes needs of schools with ELs to provide continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Monitors activities and serve as a point of contact for parent coordinators at schools through monthly reporting and site visits.
  • Develops and implements the EL Family Empowerment University (a collection of workshops and development opportunities designed to support MPS families and schools working as equal partners in student success and school improvement):
    • Produces course catalogs with workshops offered,
    • Develops tracks or institutes around specific, high-demand topics,
    • Maintains relationships with partners providing different workshops,
    • Schedules workshops at schools,
    • Facilitates MPS trainings for families and staff,
    • Works with families to develop training for MPS staff.
  • Maintains transparent communication to EL families through regular updates to the MPS website, LanguageLine, contributions to newsletters, and implementation of public awareness campaigns.
  • Creates and implements special projects, initiatives and district-wide events as designated by the Superintendent
  • Prepares reports and presentations for the director, regarding school-based and district-wide EL family and community engagement efforts.
  • Contributes to the objectives of district-wide parent advisory councils, community-based organizations, institutions of higher education, businesses, and educational agencies.
  • Establishes and maintains a networking system with outside agencies that support multilingual learners; disseminate information and resources.
  • Researches and relays relevant and current information around culturally- and linguistically-relevant aspects of the multilingual learner population in the district.
  • Manages multiple initiatives, seek clarification, and communicate regularly with supervisor(s).
  • Participates in district wide events such as family engagement of EL students.
  • Performs and completes other duties as assigned.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

This position is on the 2F - 200-day calendar.
