Position Description

Reporting to the General Manager, the Plant Manager will manage the plant's profitability by achieving or exceeding annual business goals for the manufacturing plant. In this role, you will plan, coordinate, executive, and control policies and practices essential to meet business objectives consistent with Modine's mission, vision, and goals. As a Plant Manager, you will have P&L responsibility of $60mm - $100mm annual sales, plus managing 3-6 staff departmental managers, 20-35 salaried support staff, and 100-350 production employees.

The position is the top manufacturing executive at the plant level and is the extension of the division function in terms of interpreting and implementing group and corporate policies bearing on plant operations and personnel. The position typically has a supporting staff consisting of Plant Superintendent (or General Foreman) and Managers (or Supervisors) in charge of manufacturing engineering, materials control, quality, human resources, and accounting. The incumbent communicates plant goals and objectives to the staff and coordinates their efforts and expertise to contribute to the accomplishment of such goals. He/she is responsible for accurately forecasting and managing plant contribution results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develops business plans to achieve short and long-range division and plant goals that require coordination of all staff functions.
  • Responsible for accurately forecasting and managing plant contribution results.
  • Maintains compliance with the quality requirements of corporate quality assurance, as well as of the company's customers whose products are built in the plant, while conveying to the subordinate staff a continuing awareness that achieving production goals does not preempt requirements for quality, safety, or environmental.
  • Develops plant operating budget in conjunction with the division Operations Manager, Division Controller, and other corporate functions. He/she also administers and controls plant expenditures within appropriate authorization limits.
  • Participates in and is involved in all aspects of plant employee relations.
  • Participates in contract negotiations, handles grievances at the final step according to the provisions of the labor contract, and through the HR Manager, is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the labor agreement.
  • Creates and maintains a work environment and employer/employee relationships intended to continue the desirability, from the employees' perspective, of a non-union representation.
  • Involved in the training and development of the entire staff, as well as in identifying key employees who indicate promising potential for advancement and promotion.
  • Reviews performance of immediate subordinates and recommends merit and promotion increases where warranted and approves merit increases for other salaried employees within established guidelines. Discusses with Managers the reasons for not approving submitted recommendations and counsels on corrective actions as warranted.
  • Responisble for managing and maintaining appropriate relationships with customers, as well as support functions in the corporate organization. He/she must utilize plant resources and request corporate support as necessary to resolve plant and customer problems and to improve operations.
  • Accountable for the physical and personal protection of the plant facility, its equipment, materials, and personnel. Maintain the plant and its equipment in optimum operating condition and appearance.
  • Ensures the safety of equipment and personnel by enforcing all safety measures and precautions, responsible for demonstrating environmental responsibility by controlling and minimizing all waste streams.
  • Assumes compliance with all federal and state laws under OSHA, EPA, Workers' Compensation, or company policy.
  • Continually seek out possible approaches to improve plant operations consistent with Modine policies and practices, advise management of such possibilities, and implement actions to be taken. Among these would be continuous improvement, statistical process control, throughput/speedy manufacturing, materials purchases, inefficiencies in production, and other activities and existing conditions that impinge adversely on plant contribution.
  • Incumbent is the corporate representative-at-large to the community, is involved in and encourages participation in civic affairs and associations and is responsible for maintaining favorable public relations between his/her operating plant and the community.
Required Education & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 7-10 years of broad manufacturing experience
  • 3+ years of experience in a supervisory/managerial role
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven leadership ability with a focus on empowering employees and holding accountability
  • Ability to drive peformance through clearly defined objectives and metrics
  • Demonstrated capability to foster a positive, performance-driven culture
  • Skilled in conflict resolution; Ability to address and manage conflict directly
  • Experience in coaching, developing, and building high-performing teams.
