Job Summary:



The Department of Neurology has an ongoing need for Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants) with strong values and unique skills for several of our specialties. This position will provide both acute and chronic direct care to Neurologic patients with our Neuro-Immunology section. This is an outpatient position, providing direct patient care to our patients with neuro-immunologic disease and engages closely with colleagues across the Department of Neurology, University of Colorado Hospital (UCH), and other satellite locations. Successful candidates will have a proven record of accomplishment in supporting the needs of patients, developing differential diagnoses, and prescribing treatments in collaboration with leading specialty providers. We are seeking individuals who are collaborative, communicative, proactive, caring, detail-oriented, organized, able to think critically, focused on quality, and dedicated to personal growth.

Specialty

Our providers, which consist of physicians, fellows, and APPs, see patients with multiple sclerosis, neuromyelits optica spectrum disorder, and other autoimmune and neuroinflammatory conditions, such as autoimmune encephalitis, stiff person syndrome and neurosarcoidosis primarily in an outpatient setting. The successful applicant will see and manage patients in conjunction with their physician partners, using both in-person and telehealth meetings. They will also help manage activities outside patient encounters including monitoring safety labs for various immune therapies, review of MRI scans, and managing inbox activity of patient requests in the electronic medical record application, Epic. They also will help manage baclofen pump adjustments and refills.

Examples of Work Performed



  • Screen, evaluate, diagnose, manage medications, and provide disease counseling
  • Acute and chronic outpatient care of patients with neurological disease including symptomatic therapy, disease-modifying therapy, and health maintenance care
  • Serve as first contact for clinician level patient communications
  • Engage in collaborative team-based care to make informed decisions for patient care
  • Support and engage in continual learning and development among nursing staff, physician assistants, pharmacy staff, medical students, and neurology residents
  • Periodic educational presentation of lectures to patients and others

The MS/NI section of the Department of Neurology at the University of Colorado is comprised of seven MS and Neuroimmunology doctors (four fellowship-trained adult and one pediatric MS doctors, one neuro-ophthalmologist, and two autoimmune-trained physicians,), two Adult Nurse Practitioners, three RNs and a host of associate staff. We provide clinical care at four sites in Denver and the surrounding region, with the bulk of patients seen at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, CO This year, we will complete over 10,000 patient visits for multiple sclerosis and related neuroimmunological conditions. We provide state-of-the-art care and partner with dedicated experts in numerous related fields including neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-radiology, neuro-urology, physical therapy, neuro-otology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, palliative care, and many others. Through an affiliation with a longstanding patient advocacy organization, the Rocky Mountain Multiple Sclerosis Center (RMMSC), we offer local, regional, national, and international education for patients, their families, and their providers (through professional education). The relationship between the MS/NI section at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, the University of Colorado Hospital, and the RMMSC is referred to as the Rocky Mountain MS Center at the University of Colorado. The RMMSC provides additional services including an adult day program, social work, and adaptive exercise classes.

Our team engages in a wide variety of educational activities which include mentoring junior faculty, graduate, medical, and post-doctoral students, and neurology residents; and providing Continuing Medical Education (CME) events for local primary care physicians and neurologists. We presently participate in the education of fellows in three interlacing fellowships, including adult and pediatric MS/Neuroimmunology (1-2 per year), Neuro-Infectious Disease and Autoimmune Neurology Fellowship (1-2 per year). We have trained 20 fellows, many of whom have continued with their academic careers. The successful applicant will also participate in our professional and patient/family education programs, which are supported and organized through the community based non-profit organization, RMMSC. This includes a novel, multi-year rural provider education program throughout the mountain region.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Instructor



  • Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Degree
  • License to practice in Colorado or ability to obtain a license to practice in Colorado
  • Experience and desire to work with patients with chronic, and sometimes severe illness


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Significant experience working with neurological patients and/or experience in management of chronic diseases in a subspecialty environment
  • Background in neuroscience
  • Experience working in a primary care medicine setting
  • Experience completing documentation and performing tasks routinely assigned in hospital settings using hospital record systems (e.g., Epic and Oncore)
  • Knowledge of University of Colorado Health Hospitals

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Instructor: $100,000 to $115,000

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
