Representative Duties

Basic Function:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Professional Expert will design, develop, and maintain a comprehensive Accessibility Resource Center to support faculty, staff, and students in creating and managing accessible digital content across the college. The role will focus on ensuring that documents, websites, multimedia, and online course materials meet accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, Section 508, ADA). This position will be responsible for curating and updating resources, developing best practice guidelines, conducting accessibility audits, creating training materials, and offering expert consultation to ensure equal access to digital materials for all members of the college community. The Professional Expert will collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate accessibility strategies into the college's digital platforms and broader institutional goals related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This position is distinguished from other roles by its exclusive focus on accessibility compliance and resource development for digital content across the institution. The Professional Expert is responsible for creating and curating an Accessibility Resource Center and guiding faculty and staff in the implementation of best practices for accessible documents and web content. The Professional Expert's role requires expertise in accessibility standards and technologies, along with the ability to collaborate across departments to ensure that accessibility is prioritized in the development and maintenance of digital content.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and Curate Accessibility Resources:
    1. Design and develop a comprehensive Accessibility Resource Center to provide clear guidelines, tools, and tutorials focused on improving accessibility for online content and documents (e.g., PDFs, PowerPoints, websites, etc.).
    2. Curate and regularly update resources on a wide range of accessibility topics, including visual, auditory, cognitive, and motor disabilities, with an emphasis on ensuring equal access to digital materials for all students and staff.
  2. Create Accessible Document and Web Content Guidelines:
    1. Develop detailed best practice guidelines for creating accessible documents (e.g., PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations) and web content to ensure compatibility with screen readers, keyboard navigation, and other assistive technologies.
    2. Provide faculty and staff with resources to ensure their content is optimized for accessibility, particularly for common formats used in academic and administrative settings.
  3. Conduct Accessibility Audits and Reviews:
    1. Perform regular audits of the college's digital content (including documents, websites, and multimedia) to ensure compliance with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, Section 508).
    2. Identify areas for improvement and collaborate with departments to implement necessary changes to ensure content accessibility across the college's digital platforms.
  4. Develop Training Materials for Faculty and Staff:
    1. Design and produce training materials, including tutorials, guides, and video resources, to educate faculty and staff on accessibility best practices for digital content creation and management.
    2. Lead workshops and provide training sessions on how to make content accessible in various formats, including but not limited to PDFs, Word, PowerPoint, and web-based materials.
  5. Support College-wide Accessibility Initiatives:
    1. Collaborate with faculty, staff, and the IT department to ensure that new content and platforms (e.g., LMS, websites, and online resources) comply with accessibility standards from the outset.
    2. Assist in integrating accessibility resources and strategies into broader institutional goals related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  6. Offer Expert Consultation and Recommendations:
    1. Provide consultations to faculty and staff seeking advice on making online course materials, websites, and other digital resources accessible to a wider range of students.
    2. Provide actionable recommendations on how to improve accessibility in documents and digital content to ensure inclusion for all users.
  7. Measure Effectiveness and Track Progress:
    1. Develop metrics to assess the effectiveness of accessibility resources and training programs, including feedback surveys and analytics, to monitor their impact on faculty and staff adoption.
    2. Continuously improve resources based on feedback from faculty, staff, and students to ensure ongoing relevance and effectiveness.
  8. Develop a Long-term Accessibility Strategy:
    1. Design a sustainable, long-term strategy for accessibility improvements across the college's digital content and platforms.
    2. Create a roadmap for continuously enhancing accessibility, focusing on both immediate and future needs, with a clear vision for how accessibility will be embedded into the college's ongoing digital initiatives.
