DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an intern, you will collaborate closely with the Automotive Equipment Foreman to develop essential skills for safe and efficient operation within an automotive garage environment. Throughout your internship, you will acquire knowledge related to general repairs and maintenance for cars and light trucks, including tasks such as oil changes, tire replacements, brake inspections, and exhaust system evaluations. You will have the opportunity to assist with or carry out various repairs and maintenance tasks, utilizing power, hand, and air tools once you have demonstrated proficiency. Maintaining a clean and organized work area, along with proper care for tools and equipment, will be part of your responsibilities. It is crucial to ask questions whenever you encounter uncertainties or new challenges, ensuring that you practice and adhere to safety protocols consistently.

In addition to hands-on experience, you will gain a foundational understanding of general repair and preventative maintenance for vehicles, including documentation of repairs and comprehension of work orders. You will learn the correct handling, usage, care, and storage procedures for tools and equipment, while also observing and practicing safety skills in the automotive garage setting, particularly concerning hazardous materials and equipment. Soft skills such as punctuality, responsibility, and accountability will be emphasized, along with the importance of completing time sheets and utilizing computer diagnostics. As you progress, you may assist more experienced tradespeople with complex repairs, including engine rebuilds, heating and cooling system repairs, transmission work, and routine body repairs. Additionally, you may be required to travel to various work sites and participate in field activities across the District and throughout the state.

If the student is a minor, the student will be driven by the supervisor or staff member for any travel within the workday.
Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • If you are selected for this position, you will work directly with your workplace supervisor to determine a work schedule that coordinates with your school schedule.
  • Internship will run July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years old at time of hire.
  • Must be in a junior- or senior-year status during the 2025-26 school year.

Additional Requirements:
  • Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
  • Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
  • By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Preferred Qualification (not required):
  • Current enrollment in a formal welding vocational-technical (vo-tech) career and technical education program.
