Principal Power Systems Engineer

Summary: We are currently seeking a highly motivated, forward-thinking electrical engineer to join the our electrical, SCADA, and I&C teams, where you will be responsible for designing, evaluating and supporting advanced fuel cell-based systems for power generation, carbon capture, hydrogen production and energy storage. This position requires flexibility to work on multiple projects, covering a range of systems and technologies, in various stages of the design or validation process. Essential Functions/Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee and provide strategic direction for the design and engineering projects related to product improvement and development.
- Lead efforts in the design, evaluation, and support of equipment for renewable power generation and conversion, including inverters and rectifiers.
- Provide expert guidance in Electrical Systems Design, including Single Line & Three Line Drawings, Wiring & Interconnect Drawings, Electrical Layouts & Details, Power Distribution Drawings, Panel Layout & Design Drawings, and Arc Flash Safety and Calculations.
- Develop advanced designs for Power Inverters and DC to DC conversion systems.
- Prepare detailed electrical engineering designs for fabrication, including AC distribution, DC distribution, and small system controller power systems.
- Conduct and oversee complex electrical engineering calculations in support of electrical system designs, including electrical equipment sizing, feeder sizing, and equipment selection.
- Coordinate interdisciplinary efforts in the preparation and development of deliverables, ensuring seamless integration of inputs from other disciplines.
- Prepare and validate documentation for engineering changes and product design verifications.
- Evaluate components and processes used in distributed generation systems, and write procedures, specifications, and preventative maintenance plans.
- Collaborate with key electrical equipment suppliers to select components and equipment based on rigorous analysis of specifications.
- Perform advanced Electrical System Modeling and simulation, including fault current analysis and arc flash hazard assessments of system designs, inrush mitigation, circuit protection scenarios, and supplemental grid solutions.
- Configure and program electrical devices such as variable frequency drives, providing high-level engineering support to service personnel.
- Develop and lead the creation of PLC/HMI Software for new and existing control systems, ensuring advanced knowledge and experience.
- Lead the selection of suitable Controls System Components, and program and commission SEL relaying and RTAC controllers.
- Develop and program PLCs for complex electrical control systems such as microgrids and automatic transfer systems.
- Lead the development and testing of new and modified fuel cell controls subsystems and Integrated Control Systems to validate their suitability.
- Mentor team members, sharing technical knowledge and expertise, and actively engaging in upskilling initiatives to ensure that the team remains at the forefront of industry advancements. This includes organizing training sessions, workshops, and providing ongoing support to enhance the technical competencies of all team members.
- Select suitable Instrumentations and Field Actuators, considering operational variations and perform I/O loop checks on new controls systems and retrofitted existing Control systems.
- Prepare and maintain Engineering design documentation, supporting the troubleshooting and resolution of I&C-related field issues, and provide system commissioning and operational support.
- Ensure compliance with National Electrical Code and Safety Standards, UL 1741, IEEE 1547, and NFPA 70 & 79.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical engineering or related field. PE License strongly preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 7 years of applicable work experience with focus on design, analysis, and implementation of Power Distribution Systems in industrial applications. Minimum 5 years of specialized experience with Microgrid design, control systems and project leadership.
- Thorough understanding of Medium and Low Voltage Switchgear and the safety requirements for working around such equipment.
- Experience programming SEL Protective relaying and RTAC RTU's
- Experience programming PLCs, including hardware configuration, Ladder Logic, Structured Text, and User Defined Function Blocks.
- Experience programming Human Machine Interfaces (SCADA, HMI's).
- Experience programming Complex control systems such as automatic transfer systems and microgrids for power distribution systems.
- Thorough understanding of communication networks
- Programming experience with Modbus and DNP protocols, and IEC61850 systems
- Familiar with P&IDs, PFDs, Logic Diagrams, Instrument Loop Diagrams.
- Ability to work with Electrical Engineering to develop electrical drawings and documentation (e.g. Single Line, Three Line, Wiring & Interconnect Drawings)
- HAZOP, FMEA, DFSS, electrochemistry experience desired.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to work effectively with others, both internally and externally.
- Team player who works willingly with others and keeps a positive, goal-focused outlook when tackling challenging, time-sensitive engineering problems.
- Flexible and adaptable to rapidly shift gears into multi-disciplinary roles based on current project requirements.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
- Must be able to work physically in the office environment, lab environment and in the field, wearing required personal protective equipment as designated.
- Lifting up to 25 lbs., utilizing both hands simultaneously, utilizing hand tools, test equipment.
- Walking/standing/working in an office, lab, fabrication area, or designated construction site environment.
- Other physical requirements (pushing, pulling, and bending) may be required to perform inspections, make connections, take photographs, or access installed equipment.
- Travel: 15% domestic or international
