The Compartmented Security Group within the Security Services Department at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking an Assistant Group Supervisor to help lead a dynamic, mission-critical team supporting national security programs across over twenty different government agencies. This role is key to ensuring continued excellence in support to our mission partners, internal stakeholders, and expanding sponsor base.

In this leadership role, you will work alongside the Group Supervisor to provide strategic oversight and day-to-day support for a twenty-five person team of contractor Special Security Representatives (SSRs), Section Supervisors, and Project Coordinators. You'll be responsible for ensuring compliance, safeguarding classified information, and supporting an array of mission partners across the intelligence and defense communities. As an Assistant Group Supervisor you will...

  • Partner with the Group Supervisor to providing strategic direction, operational oversight, and personnel leadership for the ZPC Group.
  • Mentor, coach, and supervise staff, to ensure consistent performance and professional development.
  • Oversee and contribute to SCIF operations, inspections, accreditations, and compliance efforts.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders, government sponsors, and external partners.
  • Analyze group performance metrics and help implement process improvements and efficiencies.
  • Contribute to departmental and enterprise-level working groups and initiatives, helping represent security interests across APL.
  • Oversee the Group 's budget and execution. This includes, but is not limited to monitoring staffing levels allocated to projects to control spending rates, defining, negotiating and tracking Group level overhead, capital funding allocations and office space. Plan resources for future facility and capital improvements. Work with SECD 's Business Manager to establish methodologies to forecast and track resource needs.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a bachelor's degree and 7+ years of relevant experience in security management, operations, or related domains.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of SCI security principles, and experience applying government policies, specifically the Intelligence Community Directive series or DoD SCI manuals.
  • Have experience leading or mentoring staff and collaborating across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Possess excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Hold an active TS/SCI security clearance and can ultimately obtain a TS/SCI+poly level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Have prior experience in a deputy or supervisory capacity within a security team.
  • Have prior experience managing staff within a matrixed organization with multiple reporting responsibilities.
  • Are familiar with APL's security structure and mission sponsor landscape.
  • Bring experience with SCIF planning, sponsor inspections, DISS, and Scattered Castles
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on operational support.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
