Position Summary

The New Mexico HPV Prevention Center is a complex clinical and public health research center. The Center has been supported by industry, state and federal grant dollars. The Sr. Research Scientist 2 plays a key role in overseeing the management of the Bioinformatics and Biostatistics work for the Center and core functions of the New Mexico HPV Pap Registry. The position works directly with the Center Director, Faculty of the Center and the New Mexico HPV Pap Registry (NMHPVPR), Strategic Support Manager, and staff to assist with the development and implementation of NMHPVPR policies consistent with the standard operating procedures ensuring efficient, productive and safe operations of public health reporting activities, and associated laboratory and clinical research. Specifically, database management, detailed computer applications work, reporting data and quality control review is a large part of the job. The Sr. Research Scientist 2, coordinates and facilitates Biostatistics and Bioinformatic functions, as appropriate, interacting and working with internal staff, including an in-house IT group and Biostatisticians and participates in internal and external activities of the NMHPVPR to achieve its goals. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills and will be able to adapt to changing priorities and provide support for a variety of research, public health surveillance, and computer efforts. Expertise in human papillomavirus infections and the cancers supports success in this position.

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 146 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico's cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated 13,578 patients in 105,748 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 1361 patients participated in cancer clinical trials, including 544 (40%) patients who participated in clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 102 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $36.2 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published 930 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 530 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

a. Experience working in clinical research and public health interventions

b. Experience supervising and supporting a unit of team members

c. Experience working specifically in the field of HPV research

d. Experience working on research from both state and federal funding sources

e. Experience managing IRB regulated research protocols and data use

f. Experience maintaining all project documents including confidential information from large-scale projects using protected information

g. Experience with protected health information, public health surveillance data, informed consent, and data collection and transformation

h. Experience generating program analytic statistics to document data quality control, assurance and managing data security

i. Experience managing and supporting faculty and staff as well as outside collaborator compliance records to meet institutional, state and federal regulations particularly for public health and human research
