General Information:

University Recreation (UREC) is currently seeking applicants for the Assistant Director for Member Services. UREC is a Health & Well-being department within the Student Affairs division. The mission of UREC is to promote and advance healthy lifestyles through educational programs, participation opportunities and supportive services. UREC's qualified staff is committed to excellence and responsive to the developmental needs of their participants. UREC professional staff members are passionate about teaching and working with students as we strive for excellence in building a welcoming atmosphere for every participant, visitor and employee!

Duties and Responsibilities:

#1: STAFF LEADERSHIP: Provides strategic leadership to Member Services staff, programs and operations. Provides supervision, leadership and mentorship to one full-time staff member, one part-time staff member, a graduate assistant, and over 70 student staff members. Responsible for the effective recruiting, training, and evaluating all Member Services staff to ensure continued excellence in making UREC one of the most welcoming and inclusive locations on campus.

#2: MEMBER SERVICES LEADERSHIP: Leads all aspects of the UREC Welcome Center, Wellness Center, Equipment Center, and University Park Gatehouse, including planning for daily operations, policies, procedures, and related technologies. Oversees UREC member and visitor access control, ensuring efficient entry for students, faculty/staff, alumni, spouses, dependents, emeriti and affiliate members. Approves short-term facility access through guest and visitor pass management. Maintains and improves processes for services and implements best practices for equipment check out, program registration, fee collection, lost and found services, towel/locker services, and item sales. Collaborates with the Coordinator of Member Services in determining UREC facilities rentals and reservations policies, processes, communication and fees.

#3: TECHNOLOGY & DATA: Serves as an expert and resource for recreation software (Fusion) processes including memberships, facility access, program registration, usage reporting, and check out equipment. Trains member services staff to handle basic Fusion user issues and offers guidance to UREC professional staff in utilizing the software. Determines Fusion semester calendars, runs participant reports, access data, and provides HTH 100 access reports to faculty members. Provides oversight of courtesy visit and no-show tracking and communication.

#4: COLLABORATION & EXTERNAL RELATIONS: Cultivates relationships within the department, division and across campus with a focus on enhancing prospective student, external group, and member experiences. Ensure new members and external groups are provided with relevant UREC policies, procedures, and important information. Ensures the UREC visitor and tour experience is positive and aids in the recruitment of prospective JMU community members. Collaborate with the UREC Services team to lead Admissions event efforts, design and facilitate UREC presentations, respond to inquiries, and represent UREC at campus fairs. Serve as the departmental liaison to Card Services related to UREC memberships. Ensure all member services staff have up-to-date and accurate information to communicate to UREC participants.

#5: ADMINISTRATION: Serves as an active member of the program and facility supervision team. Maintains an organized record-keeping system for all areas of operations, including equipment inventory. Prepares budget proposals and manage resources within the member services area. Requisitions purchases for equipment, services, and supplies to support member services. Serves on divisional and institutional committees, commissions, and task forces as assigned. Engages in staff meetings and departmental events to support teammates and the department/university mission. Supervises the approval of payroll for member services staff, ensures accurate budget management, and maintains a +/- 2.5% margin for all student employee budgets. Effectively utilize conferences and other professional development opportunities as tools for staying current in the field and integrating best practices into member services.

Qualifications:

Required:



  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two or more years of related full-time experience (a graduate assistantship is considered year of experience per year)
  • Demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills


Preferred:



  • Master's Degree in related field
  • 3-5 years of related experience
  • Knowledge and experience in member services in a collegiate setting
  • Experience supervising student employees in a collegiate setting
  • Experience in facilitating customer service training
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to efficiently manage multiple technology platforms
  • A strong commitment to fostering collaboration and promoting inclusivity
