The Opportunity

Our Power & Energy Solutions team is looking to add a Senior Power Trader to our Commercial Marketing & Trading Team, focusing on trading the North East, & PJM markets, based in Houston, TX.

The role provides ample scope for the deployment of discretionary VaR in the pursuit of appropriate return multiples, as well as the coordination of Origination / mid-Marketing resources towards the construction and scaling of an Asset Portfolio befitting of a large-scale infrastructure company. The successful Trader will act with integrity, audacity, and humility in equal measure, in the collaborative pursuit of yield as well as a durable, strategically accretive asset footprint. Activities will be consistent with the Purpose of enhancing infrastructure returns & empowering ongoing energy infrastructure innovation. Coordination of efforts with a fast growing cross-functional team of fundamental & transmission analysts is essential as we seek to consequentially deploy capital both short & long-term initiatives.

What you'll do

  • Enthusiastically contribute to the overall P&L of the US Power group through financial trading of Power and natural gas instruments

  • Maintain an accurate and defendable power position, and deliberately deploy risk within Portfolio tolerances

  • Execute trades in day-ahead and real-time markets to capitalize on congestion opportunities and mitigate associated risks.

  • Collaborate with other stakeholders to build a regional price view to support short term trading initiatives as well as longer term strategic efforts

  • Evaluate both current and future transmission constraints and outages across the ISO, and provide direction and views for power portfolio development

  • Apply quantitative analysis to understand market dynamics and make data-driven decisions, using a plethora of sources such as weather forecasts, ISO data, asset specific info, PPA conditions, etc.

  • Price and quote commercial opportunities brought by the Origination teams, whilst also advising round commercial / contractual terms

  • Provide as required, asset and power purchase agreement contract management with the assistance of the Origination and Asset Operations groups

  • Take ownership of specific Portfolio topics as the regional subject matter expert, and provide insights into these topics.

Minimum qualifications

  • Post Secondary Degree in finance, economics, or a related field

  • 5 years of demonstrated financial success in power trading (preference for regional expertise in PJM but will consider other ISO experience)

  • Experience transacting in PJM (and MISO); focus on short- and medium-term markets, with instruments such as dailies, weeklies, virtuals, CRRs and PTPs.

  • In depth knowledge of the wholesale electricity markets, trading in those markets, and the associated infrastructure supporting those markets

  • Familiarity with transmission system operations, power flow modeling, and grid reliability standards is preferred.

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with proficiency in data analysis and market modeling

  • Demonstrate risk appropriate decision-making abilities

Preferred qualifications

  • 10 years experience trading PJM power

  • An advanced degree in Finance, MBA, Engineering, or equivalent analytics discipline

  • A Sub-10 GHIN

  • Demonstrable proficiency / fluency in Python or similar
