The primary duties of the Andrologist are to proficiently perform basic andrology with appropriate advancement to perform higher skilled procedures. The Andrologist will interact with patients and perform laboratory testing of semen. Excellent laboratory skills are required, especially in the areas of semen analysis, preparation of sperm for IUI, TDI or ART procedures and sperm freezing. The Andrologist will be responsible for daily operation of the andrology laboratory, including performing quality control and assurance procedures and maintaining inventory of the equipment, consumables, and specimens.

The Andrologist maintains the andrology laboratory according to CAP and CLIA standards. The Andrologist must be well-organized as they will also maintain the laboratory database, appropriate logs and patient records and is responsible for the day-to-day functions of the andrology laboratory, including management of the frozen specimen inventory. The Andrologist is part of a small team that functions to provide services in embryology, andrology and hormone analyses, all of which the Andrologist should be able to perform. The Andrologist possesses excellent customer service, written and oral communication skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. BS in medical technology, chemistry, physical science, or biology from an accredited institution.

2. Possess or be eligible for a West Virginia Laboratory License.

3. Must maintain the WV Laboratory License with at least 10.0 contact hours of CEU/year.

EXPERIENCE:

1. One (1) year of experience with andrology procedures in either a clinical or research/education setting.

2. Must be credentialed to perform advanced andrology procedures without supervision.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Additional continuing education credits in laboratory science.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Three (3) years or more of experience performing advanced andrology procedures including anti-sperm antibody testing and sperm morphology

2. One year or more of experience with embryology procedures

3. Master's in clinical laboratory science, reproductive physiology or relevant field from an accredited institution

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs a variety of andrology activities which may include semen analysis, hormone testing, genetic testing, and sperm banking.

2. Performs patient testing and must be proficient in all aspects of semen analysis, preparation of sperm for IUI, TDI and ART procedures, and sperm freezing.

3. Performs related laboratory testing of sperm as required: such as sperm viability testing, fructose testing, anti-sperm antibody testing.

4. Assists the laboratory director with selection of appropriate materials for andrology-related proficiency testing.

5. May work with other units to recommend procedures like sperm retrieval, intrauterine insemination (IUI), or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

6. Oversees all andrology laboratory quality control in the laboratory. Provides quality-related documentation for the laboratory to the laboratory director or their designee for review at established intervals.

7. Reports and analyzes patient data once testing is completed. Prepares quality data of key performance indicators.

8. Works in conjunction with physicians, the clinic manager and other clinic personnel to organize patient procedures and patient flow through the laboratory.

9. Confers with physicians about results of semen analyses and related laboratory techniques as applicable.

10. Works with laboratory director to implement new testing procedures or update existing procedures when relevant.

11. Maintains the andrology laboratory in accordance with all CAP and CLIA guidelines.

12. Responsible for maintenance of equipment in the andrology laboratory including scheduling of preventative maintenance and overseeing any necessary repairs.

13. Manages monthly billing and general inventory for all cryopreserved specimens in both andrology and embryology.

14. Revises or contributes content to the laboratory procedure manual as needed for all andrology-related items.

15. Supervises any students and ancillary personnel in the andrology laboratory.

16. Trains new personnel in andrology procedures and is responsible for annual re-certification of established laboratory personnel in andrology procedures.

17. Assists in the embryology laboratory and reproductive endocrine laboratories as needed. This includes running hormone assays on automated machinery.

18. Works regular weekend and holiday rotation in addition to covering emergency services (i.e. alarm call for equipment failure) when needed.

19. Participates in performance and quality improvement (i.e. follows established protocol, identifies deviations or deficiencies in standards/systems/processes and communicates problems to the laboratory director or clinic manager).

20. Maintains confidentiality according to policy when interacting with patients, physicians, families, co-workers and the public regarding demographic and clinical information.

21. Complies with Notices of Privacy Practices, and the Patient's Rights and Responsibilities.

22. All staff shall cooperate with the WVUMedicine Corporate Compliance Program during their employment.

23. Demonstrate knowledge of procedure to report and/or document unsafe/hazardous conditions, incidents and defective equipment in compliance with hospital policy.

24. Complies with annual competency requirements related to emergency preparedness, hazards, blood borne pathogens, universal precautions, infection control, electrical/fire safety, material safety data sheets and any other topic deemed appropriate to assigned work areas.

25. Demonstrates flexibility to meet the needs of the clinic in regard to changes in work volume, planned change, scheduling changes and emergency call-backs (i.e. weather, disaster or alarm system)

26. Communicates problems hindering workflow to the laboratory director in a timely manner.

27. Communicates effectively verbally and in writing and places high emphasis on customer service. Receives and relays pertinent information to other members of the healthcare team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and feeling are necessary body movements utilized in performing duties throughout the work shift

2. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time

3. Must have reading and comprehension ability

4. Must be able to read and write legible in English

5. Visual acuity must be exceptional

6. Must be able to communicate effectively

7. Must be able to exert in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally to move patients or objects

8. Must have manual dexterity to operate microscopes, pipettes, keyboards, telephones and other laboratory equipment
