Job Summary

The Surgical Pre-Assessment (SPA) Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable to ensure that the pre-surgical process is facilitated in collaboration with clinic staff, physicians, and surgery departments with a focus on patient safety, customer service, minimizing delays and cancellation, and meeting the facility's goals for patient satisfaction and national quality core measures. The Surgical Pre-Assessment (SPA) RN is experienced in the surgical process and is able to facilitate pre-op interviews, screening, assessment, and teaching/education to prepare the patients and families for surgery or procedures and care following discharge.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrate the ability to appropriately assess patients, apply clinical interventions,
  • Assists with patient education and documents all teaching appropriately. Teaching materials at the station are available for utilization in an organized manner. Reinforces the teaching provided to the patient by the provider and gives additional teaching as necessary. Documents teaching in the medical record.
  • Establishes nursing care for patients based on nursing process. Utilizes standards of nursing practice, policies, protocols and professional judgment. Collaborates with the physician and Healthcare team in the coordination of care needs. Utilizes critical thinking in providing guidance and care.
  • Clinical record reflects accurate and timely documentation to ensure continuity and quality of resident care.
  • Facilitate and schedule necessary testing.
  • Coordinates testing with physician schedules
  • Facilitates efficient, appropriate, coordinated care to ensure a positive patient outcome.
  • Screen laboratory/diagnostic test results for abnormal results and alert the ordering provider.
  • Handles unanticipated events and crisis situations in a professional manner. Is alert to potential problems and notifies appropriate individual as necessary.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

Required:
Education - Completion of a nursing education program that is approved by a board of nursing
Certifications - Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification - American Heart Association (AHA)- Within 60 days of hire or transfer; Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing.

Regarding BLS certification: The department you are applying to may require BLS certification sooner than 60 days post transfer/hire. The hiring manager will discuss this with you if it is applicable.

Preferred:
Education - Bachelors degree in Nursing

Experience - 1+ years of Hospital Experience

Physical Requirements:
Light work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
