Restorative Justice Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Restorative Justice Specialist will serve as a member of the treatment team within a new, 45-bed men's behavioral health unit operated by Boston Medical Center (BMC) within the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department's (SCSD) Jail. In collaboration with Clinical and Administrative leadership, this role will help ensure the implementation of restorative justice practices on the unit through the leveraging of lived experience. Responsibilities will include facilitating restorative justice healing circles as well as conducting supplementary individual and group sessions with clients. This role requires practicing non-judgmental client centered care and cultural humility to care for an impacted client population who is often marginalized within the healthcare and justice systems.

As part of this innovative new collaboration between BMC and SCSD, this role will report into the BMC Department of Psychiatry, directly reporting to the program's director. Work will be completed within office and clinical settings, both housed within a setting of incarceration. This is a per diem position, preference for those able to work evenings and/or Saturdays. The person who fills this position must adhere to all of BMC's RESPECT behavioral standards.

Location: Onsite at the Suffolk County Jail - 200 Naushua St.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:


  • Responsible for coordinating restorative justice healing circles in alignment with restorative justice principles and program philosophy
  • Conduct both individual and group sessions with clients utilizing the restorative justice framework and lived experience to support client's personal growth and coping strategies
  • Collaborate with a broader team of physicians, social workers, case managers, and peers as a member of an interdisciplinary care team.
  • Participate in staff meetings and clinical care conferences as needed.
  • Complete any necessary training to continue to acquire new skills and abilities to address circle keeping and restorative justice.
  • Adhere to departmental/organizational policies and procedures including maintaining HIPAA standards and confidentiality of protected health information.
  • Comply with established metrics for performance and adheres to documentation and workflow standards including clearly documenting all progress and submitting required data within expected time frames

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:


  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • Associates or Bachelors degree preferred

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Completion of restorative justice training and/or certificate programpreferred

EXPERIENCE:


  • Restorative Justice circle keeping and group facilitation
  • Preference for experience working with individuals with unmet behavioral health needs
  • Preference for lived experience within the criminal legal system and/or identifies as formerly incarcerated

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA):


  • Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and interdisciplinary team
  • Skilled at building rapport and trust with patients, particularly those impacted by unmet behavioral health needs and who may be historically challenging to engage
  • Strong de-escalation skills to ensure a safe and respectful environment conducive to restorative justice practices
  • Understanding of the ability to leverage personal experiences while needing to maintain appropriate boundaries within correctional setting
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate in a courteous, pleasant and professional manner with healthcare providers, patients and families, general public, staff members, external agencies, and other organizational leaders.
  • Ability to work independently and to make decisions based on established policies and procedures.
  • Proficient oral and written English communication skills.
  • Bi-lingual and/or bi-cultural candidates preferred
