Henry Ford Health (HFH) is seeking an experienced and business-minded commercial real estate focused attorney to join our distinguished Office of General Counsel. In this pivotal role, you will serve as a trusted legal advisor to our Real Estate Services and Corporate Facilities teams, helping to shape the future of healthcare infrastructure across our system. This position offers the opportunity to lead complex real estate transactions-ranging from site acquisition and development to leasing and compliance-within a nationally recognized, mission-driven health system that is transforming how care is delivered in Michigan and beyond. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Act as the legal contact for the Real Estate Services and Corporate Facilities departments, focusing on reviewing, drafting, negotiating, interpreting, and advising clients on a variety of real estate-related agreements, including leases, licenses, construction documents, contractor and consulting agreements, facility-related services agreements, and other real estate documents.
- Review and interpret complex commercial leases, advising clients on related rights and responsibilities, especially within the legal frameworks specific to medical facilities and healthcare organizations.
- Prepare, review, and negotiate leases, lease amendments and renewals, consents to assignment, tenant notice letters, and other ancillary legal documents.
- Draft tenant notice letters, including but not limited to Notices of Default, Demand Letters, and Move-Out letters.
- Provide legal advice to HFH leaders regarding real estate matters, including potential risks and legal implications.
- Manage outside counsel handling leases for the client, ensuring timeliness, efficiency, and successful resolution of negotiating points consistent with the client's risk tolerance.
- Represent HFH in legal disputes related to real estate transactions, including litigation, if necessary.
- Stay updated on relevant real estate laws and regulations to provide accurate legal guidance.
- Regularly and collaboratively interact with Office of General Counsel attorneys, Compliance and Business Development, other business unit leaders, and all levels of organization personnel.
- This position may be required to take on additional attorney responsibilities as may be needed within the department.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Advisory experience in real estate matters, including work with senior executives and management professionals
- High-level analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Capability to function independently as well as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail
- Proficiency in conducting thorough legal research
- Excellent organizational skills
- Proficient in legal writing and documentation
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Juris Doctor Degree (JD) from an accredited law school; Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a law firm, corporate legal department, and/or government agency specializing in real estate matters
- Healthcare Law experience preferred; including familiarity with the Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law (applicable safe harbors and exceptions), HIPAA, and environmental laws.
