Description:
The Director, Compliance designs, plans, and oversees an effective compliance program. The Director ensures that the compliance program prevents, identifies, assesses, and mitigates compliance risks. The Director is a key member of the leadership team who provides on-going compliance guidance and subject matter expertise on pertinent laws and regulations. The Director leads a team of compliance professionals in monitoring high risk processes, reporting to appropriate governance, and assisting operational areas in remediating compliance risks that arise throughout the organization. The Director of Compliance reflects the mission, vision, and values of the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences Systems and adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversees and develops the compliance program, and key performance indicators for the compliance program
- Develops methodology for measuring the effectiveness of the compliance program in keeping with governmental and industry standards.
- Evaluates and prioritizes compliance program activities consistent with available resources
- Oversees the administration of the sanctions and exclusion screening process for employees, vendors, volunteers and third parties Oversees the development of compliance education and training for employees and periodically evaluates the training for effectiveness
- Oversees compliance projects and activities in collaboration with the University Ethics and Compliance Office or other University partners
- Oversees a system for responding to allegations of violations of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures and ensures timely resolution
- Maintains current knowledge of the regulations pertinent to the federal healthcare programs and healthcare administration Provides regular, meaningful, and consistent communication regarding compliance activities to compliance committees, senior management, hospital departments and staff .
- Collaborates with other units (e.g., Risk Management, Internal Audit, Human Resources, and University Ethics and Compliance Office.) on compliance matters.
- Consults as needed on compliance matters regarding fraud, waste and abuse, conflicts of interest, EMTALA, HIPAA, scope of practice matters, clinical documentation, research compliance and other laws and regulations.
- Work with UIC Legal Counsel and UIC Chief Compliance Officer to commission and participate in
audits to investigate and monitor compliance. - Assists senior leadership in identifying potential areas of compliance vulnerability and develops
corrective action plans - Evaluates compliance program data such as audit results, hotline reports, and external reviews to
enable data driven decision-making regarding the compliance program - Continuously evaluates and analyzes key governmental sources such as the OIG Work plan, to
gleam areas of focus for the annual compliance plan. - Develops and deploys a comprehensive compliance risk assessment.
- Recommends and drafts new policies and procedures as necessary.
- Monitors legal and regulatory developments and effectively communicates the potential impact of
the changes to key stakeholders. - Promotes organizational awareness of the compliance program, its purpose and available
resources. - Models ethical conduct and encourages ethical behavior and business practices throughout the
organization. - Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, law, administration, healthcare, or a related field required Minimum of three (3) years of healthcare compliance experience required
- Minimum of two (Z) years of leadership experience required. Skilled at change management, and process improvement Possess strong administrative, analytical and management skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills to address difficult, complex issues-Strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to developing and maintaining effective work relationships
- Proven understanding of collaborative decision making and communication processes Working knowledge of healthcare compliance
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in business, law, administration, healthcare, or a related field preferred Certification healthcare compliance
- Certification in privacy compliance
- Prior compliance leadership role within an academic medical center
