Position Overview:
At the University of Minnesota, we are dedicated to changing lives through education, research, and outreach. The University Information Security department (UIS) offers a diverse environment of trust, collaboration, and mission-focused work. We seek an experienced individual to join the UIS team and take primary responsibility for designing, building, and maintaining our Linux infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with technical curiosity, interest in DevOps concepts, and a drive to learn new skills. This position requires the ability to maintain confidentiality and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical cross-functional teams.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, maintain, and monitor security infrastructure including maintenance of Linux servers and various network devices.
  • Utilize configuration management tools and automation techniques to continuously improve the efficiency of system management (such as Ansible).
  • Monitor enterprise system performance to maximize uptime and plan for growth.
  • Recommend and implement standards, procedures, and controls to ensure the security and reliability of UIS infrastructure.
  • Serve as the Linux subject matter expert and provide procedural and technical guidance to less experienced staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS plus a minimum of four years of professional Linux system administration experience, or a master's degree plus 2 years of experience, or a comparable combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Professional experience with programming or scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or similar.
  • Professional experience installing and maintaining physical and/or virtual servers
  • Experience with or knowledge of one or more of the following:
    • Networking concepts, protocols, and services.
    • One or more common configuration management tools such as Ansible, Chef, or Puppet.
    • Management of virtualization infrastructure, such as VMware, Docker, Kubernetes, or equivalent.
    • Configuration and management of cloud infrastructure.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Ansible Tower (or AWX)
  • Experience with RHEL, CentOS, Rocky Linux, or equivalent
  • Experience with vulnerability management systems (Qualys, Tenable, Rapid7, etc.)
  • Experience with VMware
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $102,000 - $112,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
