Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Highway Safety Research Center ( HSRC), founded by the North Carolina State Legislature in 1965, works to reduce deaths and injuries on North Carolina's roads and the entire nation. The Center advances these goals across all surface transportation modes through a balanced, interdisciplinary program of research, evaluation, information dissemination, and training. HSRC works with communities and transportation professionals locally, nationally, and worldwide. We are a leader in the field of transportation research, embrace a safe systems approach, and are focused on safety for all.
Position Summary
This Research Assistant position will support a wide range of projects at HSRC focusing on road safety and improving conditions for vulnerable road users. Tasks include drafting and writing technical reports, developing web content, facilitating and hosting meetings, and scanning research literature to summarize state of practice in specific topic areas. Candidates should have education or experience in transportation, planning, public health, or a related field; strong communication skills; experience using Microsoft Office and related programs; an interest in road safety, bicycling, walking and/or transit; and the ability to work well in a team environment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Education or experience in transportation, planning, public health, or a related field.
Strong communication skills.
Experience using Microsoft Office and related programs.
Interest in road safety, bicycling, walking and/or transit; and the ability to work well in a team environment.
