Overview

Provides consultation and acts as primary contact for agency partners with regards to risk eligibility, rating, and coverages related to personal lines products. Conducts multi-state and multi-line exception underwriting to accept, modify, decline, cancel or non-renew personal lines exposures within authority level. Underwrite personal lines on an agency level and manage personal lines results on a per agency basis by evaluating and monitoring agency financials (policy counts, written premiums, loss ratios, large losses, etc.), quality of business, submission, and cancellation trends, etc. Develops, implements, and monitors profitability improvement plans for under-performing agencies as needed. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.


Responsibilities

  • Work within specific authority level to quote, accept, decline, modify, and renew risks in accordance with accepted underwriting guidelines. Work in unison with agents, PLMS, and other departments to grow and maintain a profitable book of business.
  • Conduct profit and growth analysis for assigned agents and territory. Collaborate with agency analyst and personal lines marketing specialist to complete thorough reviews of an agent's books of business and make recommendations for improvement or if needed, make recommendations for agent to be placed on APIP. Develop plan and follow-up on APIP.
  • Provide guidance to agents and other departments regarding various underwriting information. Effectively communicate underwriting decisions and appetite to agents. Reinforce the ease of doing business with Selective by meeting or exceeding agent's expectations and service quality on a consistent basis.
  • Reviews list of agency submissions for common risk characteristics to determine trends in quality of submissions. Determines course of action necessary and communicates same to the PL territory manager and team lead.
  • Handle incoming correspondence from agents and in some cases customers, responding to inquiries on coverage, and adjusting policy information based upon prescribed authority level. Conduct outbound correspondence and follow-up work to agents required to close out inquiry/transaction. Also accepts and resolves issues referred due to authority level or technical expertise.
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of coverage forms, rating plans and guidelines. Ensure adequate pricing of individual risk through proper classification, accuracy of information and adherence to company underwriting standards and philosophy.
  • Makes recommendations for efficiencies in workflow, communication, and agency management activities. Includes recommendations for the development of new/revised reports that will better support agency management activities.
  • Participates in agency visits as needed to support the Personal Lines Marketing Specialists.
  • Ensures and maintain effective service and communication with agents through telephone and written correspondences.
  • Attend meetings and provide input for rate changes, system enhancements, agent reviews, etc., and provides training for new hires.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Requirements

  • Highly proficient written and verbal communication skills.

  • Highly proficient ability to solve problems and make sound decisions.
  • Highly proficient ability to multi-task and manage workflows to meet and exceed production and service expectations.
  • Ability to effectively coach and mentor.
  • Highly effective ability to develop relationships with internal and external customers/peers.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in use of all supplied desktop tools, including the automated underwriting and email systems.

Education and Experience

  • College degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years of personal lines underwriting experience preferred. Experience underwriting high-net worth accounts strongly preferred.
  • Property & Casualty license required.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.


Pay Range

USD $71,000.00 - USD $112,000.00 /Yr.
