Job Description

Waste Connections has an immediate opening for a highly motivated, results-oriented Claims Counsel in the Legal Department in The Woodlands, Texas. This specialist in insurance law and claims management will provide a wide range of insurance-related legal services and advice to various departments and business units throughout the company's U.S. operations. Our ideal candidate possesses a robust understanding of insurance law, exceptional analytical skills, and a proven track record in litigation and dispute resolution. The role includes responsibility for maintaining relationships with key members of the company's Legal, Risk and Accounting Departments, insurance brokers, carriers and third-party administrators, and the outside counsel handling claims on behalf of the company and its insurance carriers. The Claims Counsel will work closely with attorneys in Waste Connections' Legal Department, as well as its corporate Risk Department team. This is a full-time, in-person role based in The Woodlands.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Providing legal services to various departments and business units with respect to a variety of insurance law matters around the U.S., including drafting, reviewing and interpreting legal documents such as insurance policies, contracts, complaints, answers, motions and briefs, and representing the company as needed in discovery, witness interviews, depositions, mediations, settlement negotiations and court proceedings.
  • Managing legal issues related to insurance claims, including timely and accurate claim reporting, policy interpretation, coverage analysis, and litigation management.
  • Overseeing investigations through appropriate use of internal and external resources that comply with best practices protocols.
  • Overseeing defense counsel through effective use of litigation management strategies, including the development of case specific agendas that direct accountability of counsel throughout the life cycle of a claim file, coordinating the retention of panel counsel and evaluating the performance of such firms.
  • Managing reserves throughout the life cycle of each claim with appropriate documentation supporting any reserve changes.
  • Maintaining detailed records of all insurance policies, legal proceedings and related communications.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of legal decisions, statutes and regulations that may impact claims and coverage matters.
  • Ensuring compliance with legal standards and company policies.
  • Assisting with other disputes and litigation matters.
  • Supporting merger and acquisition transactions, including insurance-related due diligence, document preparation, closing mechanics and post-closing integration.
  • Completing special projects as requested.

Qualifications

  • J.D., excellent academic credentials.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one state and active membership in good standing of the bar of at least one state.
  • 5+ years of experience practicing insurance law and related claims management/ resolution in a law firm or corporation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, dynamic and team-oriented.
  • Must be able to demonstrate solid judgment and discretion while creating solutions and resolving problems involving complex issues/circumstances.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with a strong ability to draft and review legal documents, and analyze and apply legal advice in a practical manner.
  • Hard working, well-organized and detail-oriented. Must be able to manage numerous claims/projects simultaneously under deadline pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology to streamline the delivery of legal services.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work on a broad variety of legal matters.
  • Willingness to learn and advise in other general law subject matter areas as needed.
