Reuters seeks an experienced editorial leader in Houston to drive corporate energy and oil and gas market coverage from the heart of the US energy industry. This is an exciting time to take on energy coverage with oil and gas production at a record high and as the world's top energy companies execute the biggest consolidation in the industry for two decades. The industry faces the contradictory forces of a new government that wants them to produce more oil and gas and a global energy transition that threatens their long-term existence. It will be your job to drive winning coverage of all the big stories in the sector- and how they fit into the global energy industry story- both through breaking news and investigative work.

The successful candidate will be a well-rounded, versatile leader who can drive and edit stories across a range of subjects and who brings expertise in corporate energy and markets coverage. You should be as comfortable breaking news on outages at offshore oil rigs as you are digging through earnings reports for stories. You will inspire and execute investigative reporting on Big Oil and shale. You should be ready to spearhead coverage of seasonal hurricanes and floods hitting the region and to contribute to stories across the news file that will appeal to a global audience.

About the Role

As Houston Bureau Chief, you will:

  • Set the agenda for U.S. corporate energy coverage, and help drive and collaborate with team leaders worldwide on our top global energy stories.
  • Drive a team of experienced correspondents to break exclusive news and publish the most insightful stories on the markets, industries and beats they cover.
  • Ensure depth and quality in everything we publish: from market reports through to investigative work.
  • Edit to the highest level before sending stories to the publishing desk.
  • Adapt quickly to changes in company strategy, markets and policy to ensure we deliver outstanding coverage on the most important energy and international stories from the region.
  • Drive development and career progression across the team.

About You

As Houston Bureau Chief you will likely have:

  • At least ten years of experience editing and reporting on a real-time financial news file.
  • At least five years of experience managing a team of journalists.
  • A strong understanding of corporate energy coverage, energy markets and equity coverage.
  • Impeccable news judgment and the ability to write with speed, clarity, accuracy and flair.
  • The ability to direct and edit stories across a wide range of topics, including corporate, market and general news.
  • A proven track record of framing, pitching and editing both breaking news and initiative stories, spotting trends and delivering agenda-setting big-picture stories ahead of the competition.
  • The ability to explain complex market issues to a wide business audience.
  • Strong data handling and analysis skills.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and experience working with large global teams.
