Who We Are
Founded in 1965, UC Irvine is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and is ranked among the nation's top 10 public universities by U.S. News & World Report. The campus has produced five Nobel laureates and is known for its academic achievement, premier research, innovation and anteater mascot. Led by Chancellor Howard Gillman, UC Irvine has more than 36,000 students and offers 224 degree programs. It's located in one of the world's safest and most economically vibrant communities and is Orange County's second-largest employer, contributing $7 billion annually to the local economy and $8 billion statewide. The School of Social Ecology has marshaled its interdisciplinary expertise to focus on areas including global environmental degradation, poverty and other forms of inequality, prison overcrowding and gang violence in California, healthy child development, challenges faced by an aging population, health risks and community empowerment. These efforts have made the School of Social Ecology a national leader in applying basic theory and empirical research to a range of complex societal problems. As the first and only School of Social Ecology in the nation, our researchers bring real change, in real time, to real people's lives. Combining the scientific with the practical, we turn hope for change into real answers that can leave all of us better off. Reclaiming lives. Expanding community wellbeing. And, making a safer world all around. Your Role on the Team The UC Irvine School of Social Ecology strives to develop future leaders equipped with solid communication, critical thinking, analytical, technological, and interpersonal skills through experiential field study opportunities. Since 1970, Field Study has been a requirement for students seeking a baccalaureate degree from Social Ecology and is an element of the school's commitment to training future leaders. Through concurrent coursework and field placement, these prepare students to tackle the pressing issues confronting business and community leaders locally, regionally, nationally, and globally. The School of Social Ecology is distinct in that all students are required to complete Field Study or practicum placements. We aim to expand on these mandatory courses and are creating a comprehensive Career Services Pipeline.
